What are the best bike shops around boston area?

That depends a lot on what you're looking for and value in an LBS (and how far you're willing to travel). Whats important to you? Price, selection, exotic inventory, quality/availability of the mechanics, accessories, friendly advice ???

I couldn't find all of the above in a single LBS when I was looking for a new road bike a while ago.

Anyway, if you're new to the area (or new to biking) you probably won't go wrong starting in some of the bigger places like Wheelworks, or Landrys. Or even Harris Cyclery. Very different vibes in all these shops.

I highly recommend Back Bay Bikes; they have kept me roadworthy for years with quick and reliable service. The shops mentioned above are also reputable from what I hear.

I am very biased to shops where we get to know each other by name and preferences. Grace in Holliston, is my favorite. Harris in W. Newton and Landry’s in Natick are good. Rapport means fair pricing, excellent service and advice. I trust my shop’s advice.

Classic place is of course Harris Cyclery in Newton. Great spot for parts, repairs, general knowledge. It's where I bought my bike. They are NOT in into shiny, latest and greatest stuff. For shiny stuff Quad Cycles in Arlington or of course the Belmont Wheelworks. Quad Cycles is my second favorite shop, has Campagnolo parts which are otherwise hard to find.

Harris is one, Belmont Wheelworks, Quad Cycles, ATA in Cambridge. if your into MTB i would suggest JRA in Medford.

How do you guys rate Cycle loft in burlington?

I bought my Bridgestone in about 1992 there, though I don't use the shop because it's too far away. It's still in business, which I think is a good sign. :D

I don't go there as often as some other shops, but Frank's Spoke N Wheel in Sudbury can be quite helpful.

They used to provide good support for local cyclists with rides and such- they may have even sponsored a race club. That said, if that's your scene they are great. I'd say they specialize in the lots of money can we adjust your brakes or sell you a nice jersey crowd- sort of like Belmont Wheelworks. Very fancy showroom, etc. I'm more mundane and seem to need obscure things like replacement bike parts which they used to stock but at a 30% premium over everyplace else. As a result, I ended up going to the Bikeway in Burlington or Harris who always seem to have whatever I'm looking for on some back shelf.

Landry's in boston is the best I've found in the entire greater boston area. Great pricing (they'll do online price matching - including shipping), VERY helpful/friendly, and some amazing mechanics.

How do you guys rate Cycle loft in burlington?

Avoid it. They are pricey. They do not warm up to you unless you buy a $5000 bike.

the Cycle Loft is touch and go. i've been there a few times. last time i was there i was totally ignored so i left. i only got noticed while walking downstairs a shop guy stopped me and asked me if i were the FedEx guy. so i stopped, looked at myself up and down and said to the guy.. do i look like i work for FedEx? i don't see me wearing anything that says FedEx on it, do you? so i left it with him that i was a customer who was not being helped and am now leaving and i guess that no one in this place seems to pay any attention.
