I'm sorry for beating this topic to death.. don't kill meeeh
So I just bought a Fuji Cross and it came with Alex DC-19 32H Double Walled w/CNC Sidewalls. The tires it currently has is Kenda Kwick Cross, 700 x 30c.
These are knobby tires and I want to put some slicks on these bad boys... do you guys know a brand and what size you'd recommend? I heard that gatorskins are good, also, the conti 4 seasons. I am looking for flat proof, cheap tire that is relatively fast... Thanks for your opinon guys!
I had a set of Gatorskins on my Kona Jake. I got about 1000 miles on them before I had my first flat. I kept using them until they had about 3000 miles, by which time they were starting to flat pretty often. Even then, I moved them to my fixie and put another 100 miles or so on them. I got another flat Tuesday, so I ordered a pair of Maxxis Re-Fuse, which get surprisingly good reviews for the cost. A lot of people report problems with the sidewalls on Gatorskins. There are a couple of places where the threads tore on the sides of mine, but it didn't seem to cause any practical problems.
I replaced the Gatorskins with Panaracer RiBMo's on my Jake. So far, one flat in about 1000 miles, and that was from a nasty construction staple that might have flatted a car tire. The RiBMo costs about the same as the Gatorskins, weighs about the same, feels a little bit slower, but seems to me to have better flat protection. You can get them for about $30 if you shop persistently, but a lot of places seem to be out of stock right now.
I can't really comment on the Maxxis Re-Fuse from personal experience, but having gone through this exercise earlier in the week, they seemed like the best option for under $30.
Oh, about size, I would say get 700x25 if you prioritize speed over comfort, or 700x28 if you want to give up a very little speed for more comfort. Continental has a different idea of size from the rest of the world, so if you go with Gatorskins, expect 25's to really be 23 mm wide, considering which I'd recommend 28's even if speed isn't a big concern. If you go below 25, I believe the tire become more susceptible to flats.
