Boss bought Ghost 14.0 to backup his windows XP machine. Installed it and trying to backup and Ghost is telling him it cannot find a restore point and cannot create one while windows is running and wanting him to go to recovery mode.

Any ideas what this means?

Not sure. It may want you to create a book disk version and run from the boot disk at startup.

Tell yer boss he's and idiot for buying ANY Norton product. Should have got Acronis True Image instead.

several foosters reccomended Ghost when the backup utility that is supposed to be in Windows XP would not work on his machine either. Strange, we have basically identical machines, bought on same day from same store, same brand, same model.

Mine took a memory upgrade, his would not

Mine backs up fine, his will not.

It seems either he or his machine are cursed.

Sounds like something is configured weird in his machine (possibly in hardware)....or he just got a freakin' lemon.


Acronis True Image is the same type of product as Norton Ghost, except that its NOT Norton which is a very good thing.

use ghost boot disc and save the disc image file to another drive.
might need mr.floppy to do it.

maybe how the OS was installed. Do you have an official copy of XP on his PC, or is it copy the Geek Squad installed?

To fix the Ghost issue, he chould run chkdsk on the c drive and reboot. This helps get volume shadow copies consistant, and should allow you to image the drive

Earlier versions of Ghost were good, but modern versions, I've not been really happy with.

Instead, I recommend Acronis TrueImage, because it can make an image both offline (you make a burned CD and copy the image of the OS to a different drive), and online.

+1 to the two recommendations for Acronis True Image. Just say no to Norton/Symantec.

What killed Ghost as an option for me was when they came out with a version that didn't support offline imaging of an OS. You had to do it within the operating system.

The only thing I wish TrueImage had would be true AES-256 encryption (not password protection) of backups. This way, should someone steal the backup drive, the data is still protected.

You can store the TrueImage backup-image on a drive with encryption.

Yeah, Ghost sucks. Easiest solution for the boss is to get rid of Ghost and get Acronis True Image.

That is true. However, restoring is difficult because you need the OS and drivers to mount the encrypted drive before you can restore the image. If someone is technical, they can do a BartPE CD that does this with TrueImage and TrueCrypt present. However, it would be nice if TrueImage had this functionality built in.
