Hi guys/gals, I picked this up because I have always wanted to try out Campy and because the price was right---and it being my size didn't hurt either. The owner didn't recall much about the bike except that he figured it was "10 years old" so I took some shots of the bike, hoping that someone can give me some information about it. It looks black but it is in fact a deep purple.

The frame is lugged and only says "Cro Mo Double Butted" so I guess it ain't anything special but I am more interested in the Campy stuff----can anyone tell me what level the components are? I am guessing Centaur or something mid-range but I really don't know. Also, you can see that I will need some new hoods, what should I expect to pay for replacements?

its a smart looking bike to be sure. i cant imagine how nice a campy drivetrain would be compared to the 1973 schwinn le tour stuff on my bike right now.

everything about the bike looks to be original and from the early '90's. They were nice riders. The parts group is a little heavy (veloce?) but worked pretty well.

The Allez from the early 1990's had a very nice frame. The later Allez model was one of the last lugged frame steel road bikes from one of the "big" companies, and the frame and fork compared well in quality to the pro quality steel frames and forks of the 1965 to 1985 era. A nice bit of cycling history, and a very fine riding bike.

Great information folks, thanks! Where would I find some replacement hoods? LooseScrews has them but they are $40, is that about right? Or has anyone seen them cheaper?

So far, riding it around today for about 20 miles, the Campy shifting is nice and crisp but I am used to the Shimano STI shifting and wrapping my thumb around the bar to hit the thumb-shifter takes some getting used to. The bike is also a little neglected so has some grease and dust that needs to be taken care of.

It rides well though, just as you guys say...

I've seen the hoods fairly regularly on eBay for about $29. $40 is not that far off if you don't want to wait, though.

You can probably find a complete set of Veloce ergos with decent hoods for $40 or so on ebay. Then you'll have spare parts, which are getting hard to find in the 8 speed variety.
