Assuming a dry day - how thin can I get away with? 32?

I've done long stretches with 23s - not recommended unless you have the handling skills and are insane. 25s or 28s would work fine, though - and 32s would be nice.

I might go as skinny as 28s for a short ride, dry, not carrying anything. 32s would give me margin for mudholes, deteriorated sections. I'd ask on the touring forum - a couple of folks just finished a very wet and muddy GAP+C&O tour. Looks like there's at least 2 ride reports in the tour reports subforum (http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=212). Also a thread about mud riding here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=555955&page=2). Looks like 2 of the riders on the GAP/C&O tour used 32mms and fenders in the mud and were fine. HTH

I just finished a week with a Scout group riding from Antietam to DC and back. If it's dry I'd say you're fine. If it's muddy like it was early last week I'd say not.
