Foo - Ant-o-Phobia

I hate ants. They're ok if outside but if they come inside then (!!!) it's because they come in hordes etc.

Anyway, there's a creepy movie on tv right now, I dunno the title but it should be called Ants on a Plane. This passenger, a fat middle aged guy is sweating/pale etc then gets up, pukes in a guy's lap then ants crawl out of him (!) and he falls down, covered with ants (ewww) this guy tries to save him, rips his shirt off but the ants tore a hole out of his chest and the guy dies. Now there are thousands of ants in the plane. BARF EW BARF.

As much as some people hate ants, you'd hate it if they were suddenly all gone. Like most things on earth, they serve a purpose. My guess is that the earth's ecosystem would improve if humans were suddenly gone, but would struggle if some insects disappeared. I never understood people's phobias, or dislikes of certain bugs or animals.

Ants...invade...they're an army of arthropods and they're quite difficult to get rid of. Plus they sting, well not the ones up here but some in other places do. I also hate silverfish if it helps.

Had to look that one up. Never heard of silverfish before. They sound adorable and are one of earths natural vacuum cleaners:

Ewwww hatching ewwww. We dont have much in the way of Roaches up here, so I never developed loathing of them, though when I went to Brasil I saw a dead one on a sidewalk and I was like "holy crap!!!" Apparently they fly!

Ants are the most amazing creatures- read Wilson's The Ants and you'll see what I mean. (Full disclosure- some of my research is in the area of artificial life, and that includes ant colony optimization and swarm behavior. I'm biased- I love ant and gnat behavior...)

My wife is "arachnophobic." I DO NOT tease her about it. I don't understand phobias either. Mine is that I can swim well, but am terrified of water where I can't touch the floor/bottom. Very odd since I grew up on the coast of Washington state. You go to the beach many times a year and swim all day, as well as comb the beach for 'stuff.'

I also have a phobia with/about hypodermic needles. Twice a year I go in for blood labs, and every time they ask if I'm OK. I always respond with "This creeps me out a little." So then the nurse starts relating how many times she's done this or that with needles. Excuse me, but did I just say I'm creeped out with needles? Damn. I guess dancing into the lab as they expose the needle would make them stop asking. Go figure. I can't even watch it on tv.

Lastly, phobias are never something to tease one about. It really can be damaging, psychologically.

Army ants are a little creepy. Bullet ants sound pretty cool, just because of the punch they pack.

The appropriate term for an irrational fear of ants is Myrmecophobia.
