"Fearsome weather coupled with a shortage of funding and support have grounded one Palo Altan's undertaking to become the first man to pedal a unique hiwheel bicycle from coast to coast.

Martin Krieg, 55, had hoped to make history by riding an Eagle across the country. Unlike most hiwheel bikes, which have enormous front wheels and tiny back wheels, the Eagle has a 50-inch rear wheel and a small wheel out front.

"At the very least, I am the first man to pedal a Hiwheel over the Sierras and across the most mountainous state in the Union, Nevada," Krieg said in an e-mail to supporters this week. "And yet for that honor, I paid a price."

Another:

"Despite his disappointment at having to call it quits, Krieg said he found the Eagle enjoyable, if tricky to ride.

"Astonishment. Double and triple takes. Praise. Innumerable photos. Respect," he said, describing public reaction to the bike, whose unique design turned as many heads when it debuted nearly 120 years ago. "People loved me wherever I went on it!"
