My friend and I are planning a trip across the country in May of 2005 that will be fully supported. We need some assistance though mapping out the roads to take. The attached document depicts our proposed course. Please let us know if the roads we chose are "rideable" and which ones they are by either posting here or email at therideof05@yahoo.com
Thanks for all your help!
p.s. If anyone would like to join, feel free to contact us. We'd love to have some more company.

Thanks, I contacted them via e-mail. Hopefully they will be able to help me out even though the contacted person said that they only have details about their routes. However, they might be able get me some more contact information.
Thanks for the help.

Wow...that's gonna be quite a ride! I live appox 20 miles from US60(Missouri) and know the area from the OK and/or KS border all the way to Springfield fairly well. If you have any specific questions about this area shoot me a pm or an email (dragracer7383 at yahoo dot com) and I'll try to help if I can. :) Probably no way I could keep up but I wouldn't mind riding a few miles with ya while your in the neighborhood. :o

Hwy 62 from Oliver Springs, TN into Knoxville, TN is a busy road. Try to do this at off peak hours. Don't know of another route to suggest though.
I wouldn't want to ride Highway 74 between Laurinburg, NC and Wilmington, NC. Too much traffic. Also, Highway 74 becomes two lane just past Maxton, NC and is two lane for quite a ways (30 - 40 miles?, they are widening it currently) before it becomes four lane again. There are other options. Look into dropping down into SC from, maybe Maxton and pickup SC highway 9 and take that east until you get to Loris, SC and there are several routes that you can take to get over to the coast. Another possibility is Highway 211. I've never ridden it though. I've ridden highway 9 from below Rockingham into Myrtle Beach and it's tolerable. Avoid this road and any road to the beaches on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Wish I could go with you!

You're more than welcome to join us when we ride through your area.
I took a look at going into SC and that looks like a good idea. The distance is shorter too. Once we get to that point, we may be keeping right up with traffic as we head to the beach. We might just ride the bikes right into the ocean. Anyway, would you be able to help out if I sent you a new route proposal to Myrtle Beach or there abouts?

David,
I'd be happy to try. I lived for many years in NC, but now I live in Alabama. I usually make the trip to Southport/Oak Island once a year. For many years, this has been our favorite vacation spot so we've become accustomed to several different ways in. Try to email me via my profile if you want or PM me if that doesn't work and I'll be glad to look at what you've got.

Here is a ride my cousin just did. Pretty intense, but fully supported. It might give you some ideas. If you click through the day-by-day journal, it gives some of the road conditions, etc. Not your exact route, but might give you some additional insight. Let me know if it helps.

Thanks. I emailed him this morning. I actually live in the Finger Lakes area that he went through. Beautiful scenery. Anyway, thanks for the link. I'm hoping he has some contacts or atleast some information on some of the roads we've chosen.

Cycle North Carolina took a similiar route through NC last year. I wasn't able to go so I don't have the cut sheet but you might be able to get in touch with them and get a copy. The roads chosen for Cycle NC are prescouted and work well for cyclists.

Thank you. Seems like they have a pretty nice tour going. Definitely looks like it's worth it. I emailed them today to see if they'd be interested in helping guide us through. They're probably pretty busy preparing for their own ride though. Thanks for the contact though.
I don't have much experience riding on those roads in TN but just a note of caution - I love this state but we apparently don't believe in shoulders on the roads around here.
