General Cycling Discussion - bike log

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

:) hi all
I have just joined this web site as it seems great!
I was wondering if anyone has a simple bike log, all it has to have is the date, distance, time
& monthly total , which I can down load and use.
I know a lot of you use more complex ones but I get lost with them as I am an old pensioner

mapmyride.com is pretty simple to use and it allows you to pull up a map, create a route that you ride by clicking on the streets, and it logs the mileage, the time, and the average speed.
I find it to work well for me.

Just use excel, or another spread sheet. You can set up something pretty simple in a few minutes where you just plug the info you want (like date, distance and time), and it can give you the total miles, a monthly total, average time per ride, average distance.
to set this up: open excel.
Column A is the date
Column B is the distance
Column C is time
Find a place for the total miles (I use D1 and D2... D2 has the formula =SUM(B:B) which tells excel to put the sum of everything in the B column into D2).
Then find a place for the monthly totals.
I use D3,E3, and F3 (month, distance, time respectively)
To put in to total distance, put =SUM(B2:B13) (or whatever the cell range is: you can put =SUM( then click and drag a range of cells instead)
Same for total time, except its =SUM(C2:C13).
and you're done. I've got a pic to help a little.
If you want more info, you can always add to your spreadsheet (like adding average distance, average speed, average time on bike, what type of ride it was). If you need help, there's plenty of online help for spreadsheets, and you can PM me, or ask here.

I use Excell too. I like to graph my data. In particular I do a published ten week training schedule for a century and I have attached a copy of a bar graph. The blue bars are the weekly recommended miles, the brown bars are my actual mileage, and the yellow line is my usual 80 mile per week commute. I find it motivates me to keep up when I plot the data and see the results. :D
BTW, week 10 is the Century week, and week 11 is the mileage I would like to do for the next few weeks until I resume training for the next century.

Thats another reason I like using Excel, or another spreadsheet program. Its simple to set up, easy to use, and can be modified on a moments notice to track some other bit of information i decide i want to know. While I'm fond of things like Mapmyride.com and bikely.com, it requires me to be online and for me to deal with ads, page loading, and some frustration getting it to map he route properly.
I use BikeJournal.com (http://bikejournal.com/). The free version does all the basics. The $20/year membership version tracks stuff even I've never heard of. Plus, I like the forum there.
You can keep your log privately, or optionally share your log with other members, or with the public. I've chosen public.
My BikeJournal Ride Log (http://www.bikejournal.com/journal_public.asp?rname=brucew)
My BikeJournal Profile (http://www.bikejournal.com/profiles.asp?rname=brucew&public=1)
As a paid member, I get to choose which columns appear in my log and in what order. I can also sort and filter by column and column data.
Note too the bike statistics in my profile. Miles on the bike, miles on each tire and miles on the chain help me keep track for maintenance.
