General Cycling Discussion - Bike to Work Day

Today was Bike to Work Day in Denver

One of our local bike shops (Treads) joined with the Town of Parker to sponsor a "breakfast on your ride to work" event at the intersection of two local major trails - both used for commuting.

It was exremely well attended - they were there about 4 hours and had a continuous crowd of folks. They also did minor bike repairs and had local info.

Excellent! Good to see there was enough traffic to keep them busy. I only wish every day of the week attracted that many commuters. :rolleyes:

I am disappointed to be missing bike to work day in Denver, though - am working out in Nevada this week. It's always encouraging to see more people out on bikes. Not that it would have helped me much - I checked out the map of all the food stations, and the closest one on my morning commute would have involved a 10 mile detour.

The Town of Parker did a good job advertising, with trailside signs the week before, also newspaper articles, etc.

Where are all the trees? (Looking at the houses in the background)

I see in Denver they also completely clear a field of trees and pack the houses in so tight you can reach out a window and touch the next house over.

They build subs like that here too - I don't like them at all. I much more prefer trees - I've got over 100 trees on my 2/3'rds acre out in the north burbs.

I can always look up at those 40' tall pines and Ashs/Oaks and see which way the wind is blowing and how much force it has so I can plan my route. I like the wind at my back on the way home.

Man, there is always a complainer in the crowd! Why is that?

Just a little geography lesson.

Denver is in the plains. It is a high desert. There are no natural trees. Every single tree you see is planted. Average rainfall is 15.4 inches per year. No trees were "cleared." Every tree is precious, and there is great consternation over any tree that is removed for any project.

Sorry you don't like my "subs." By the way we have approximately 60 feet between houses, and over 55 acres of open space in our 350 house community.

I can - walk to 9 different restaurants, a supermarket, laundry, hair cutting place, park and ride for mass transit, etc., etc. Yet, I can also leave my back door and bike for 30 miles with crossing only 3 streets. Can you say the same?

This seemed like sort of a "put down" - I certainly hope not. That was NOT the purpose nor the point of this thread! Enjoy your trees. :D
