long torsoed individuals may find that the sloping top tubes, compact geometry, can fit a bit better than the stock square geometry.
by all means, ride both and talk to your dealer about fitting and see that they're willing to go the extra mile and swap out the stem or other parts for different sizes, if needed. if you feel they're trying to push a bike on you that doesn't feel right, go somewhere else!
Long torso? It might be worth your while to check out Lemond frames and their geometry.

The two dimensions that you have to juggle are stand over height and top tube length. As you describe yourself, I'd guess you are going to want a long top tube relative to seat tube length. I'd think that a frame with a sloping top tube design might suit you well. The only potential drawback that I can see is that your handlebar might be higher than you'd like. Then again, almost all bikes today result in lower handlebar positions than I like so it may just work out to be perfect.
Lemond will be a great option for you if you have a long torso. They are in the Trek family these days so your Trek dealer should be able to get you a Lemond.
I have the opposite problem, I am 6'1" and ride a 57/58cm bike because of my rediculous legs. I have a fairly long torso though also, so typically I find that compact geometry fits me pretty well, though I HATE how it looks!
