Foo - Sunglasses: Really dark lenses?

Ok, it's incredibly hot in Austin...but I can handle that. Lots of water, frozen water bottles, lots of ice cream. But I CAN'T handle the brightness! I like my Tifosis but I feel like I need to wear two pairs, and they were the darkest ones I could find. I've borrowed my gf's Oakleys and a pair of Natives, and they're both even lighter than my current shades.

Anybody have any suggestions, other than seeing if I can carve Oakley mounts into #3 welding goggles?

I agree. It's tough to find really dark shades. I've been using these (http://www.safetycompany.com/nemesis-safety-glasses/p_672.html) for the last few years cuz they wrap around nicely, they're cheap, and they're true safety glasses. Oh, and they come in a variety of tint colors (I use 'em on my motorcycle too).

How about supplementing the shade effect with a helmet that has a visor?

Were the Natives that you borrowed ones with polarized lenses? Even on the brightest days dealing with direct sun and reflected (either from snow when climbing or water when riding next to the river) I've never had a problem with my polarized lenses.

Julbo glacier glasses might be worth looking into. I pretty sure they still make a pair that only lets in something like 8% of visible light. They're made for mountaineering so they're super dark. EMS or REI might be a good place to look. Hope this helps.

I have had several pairs of presecription sunglasses over the years with the darkest tint they could make, and they were never dark enough.

For my current pair, I broke down and paid the money for polarized lenses and that does the trick. They are perfect in any sunlight and if I wear them inside for a moment, I bump into everything because I can't see a darn thing, as they are tinted so dark.

And polarized lenses have other benefits as well, such as non-glare, crispness, and my wife can't tell when I am checking her out in public... ;)
