yesterday I saw a Mustang that had spinner rims, when the vehicle stop the rims keep spinning, I think that would be a cool idea for bikes if they could make rims that keep spinning when the cyclist stops. Any opinions on this idea ?

They look neat, but if they are cool or not is a highly debated question.

They are a bit stupid I think hell they stick out way too far. Another thing to compensate for low self esteem.

You want an opinion, and I give you one: You have too much time and not enough to do.

Bad idea on cars. Worse idea on bikes.
Then again, I have never fully accepted roll-up windows or syncromesh first gear, so you probably shouldn't listen to me.

"Bad idea on cars. Worse idea on bikes."

Just about sums it up :)

Even if they did manage to design some, I think there would probably be some stability issues. You pull up at some lights but the wheels keep rotating. The gyroscopic (or is it centrifugal?) forces from the spinning "spinner" might make you lose your balance or something.

I could be way off though.

Wouldn't hurt but it looks stupid. Whenever I see em, I'm like, what a moron. I don't think bikes need any bling bling.

I thought that was the goal of some these drivers today?

It would be great for one of those custom lowrider bikes. Some people do build bikes that are more for show than practicality, and what is wrong with that? I've seen some really cool custom bikes. Check some out here:

Pardon my sheltered Midwestern existence, but what is a spinner rim?

I smiled when I saw the first car with one.

It's like the Harlem Globetrotters. Once you've seen it once why would you care to see it again?

I already saw a set of spinners on a bike. It was a custom low-rider, but I didn't have the oppt'y to check out how it was done. Lots of bling-bling, not much else.

Image over substance. If you have to ask what's wrong with that, I can't possibly help you understand.
Turn off MTV's "Pimp my Ride", ease back on the hip hop, and just go for a ride. That is what bikes are for, after all.

Where?!? Where!? I want them for my vintage street legalized dirtbike.(seriously)

To the mid western fella. Imagine some really fancy, brightly cromed, shiny wheels with matching hubcaps, but when you stop the hubcaps keep spinning. Real flashy.

I thought they were cool when I first saw them a couple years ago. The trend now is to put them on everything under the sun which I think is cool too, as its kind of making fun of somthing just by using it.

Thanks. I had this image of the ones I saw in a movie ‘Ben Hurr’ (sp) I think (showing my age) on a chariot where the knock off in the center was actually a saw blade sort of thing that could be extended and chew up the spokes in the other guys chariot.

These sound relatively harmless.

They're unsprung weight, so it's a penalty for a car and a huge one for a bicycle. Also, could be a safety factor.

Safety be damned I want some spinners for my two wheelers. And if I get that sidecar rig I've been eyeballing... well maybe not, it's a offroad cabable rig with an engagable sidecar wheel for more go traction and a flat camo paint job, spinners would just get clogged with mud.

Some come with the mounts for the gun or mounts for a single shot TOW anti tank missle. Not the USA version though(but it has a much better engine) they are sold all over eastern europe, made in Russia from an early WW2 BMW design, been in production non stop since the nazis gave it to them.
this is desert camo with TOW launcher.

spinner rims on a bike....no....now maybe 100 spoke wheels, gold rim and hub with sterling plated spokes. Or even an full copper plate 100 spoke. Given it would be hell to assemble and very heavy, but for a lowrider or custom cruiser bike, that could look killer.

just make your own spining for your bike its easy get a bike tire without a rim then get a old rim and cut out everything except the edges of it and then cut 2 lines in the middle of it and get rollers and a thing that u want 2 spin onto tha rollers you can put barbie dolls dildos what everyyou want 2 spin if you can find long rollers and bend them into tha shape u need i do this all the time all of my low rider bikes have them on it they look phat

Instead of spinners, I want rims that stay stationary even when I'm moving. If you shell out the bucks for rims, you want people to appreciate them, even when your moving. If you connect some bling bling to your fly wheel in back, you could artificially spin it backwards while stationary and stop it while moving. I think that would be pretty cool. As for placement, outside of the spokes, you may have a mm or two of clearance.

But I think they'd get in the way of my curbfeelers and custom hydraulics.

Any ideas on the nitrous?

I'm a big fan of goofy-looking chopper bikes and other oddities. You can't really ride them for long, but they're alot of fun. I hate spinners on SUV's, but putting them on a bike would, uh, subvert the paradigm.
I go to Burning Man, so I get to see all kinds of bike art: choppers, adult-sized big wheels and bikes built for 4 or more riders.
Why is this on the commuter forum? 'Cause even commuters have a sense of humor.

What we need is a custom cruiser...metal flake pruple with gold leaf...must have a MTB suspension fork modified to work as "hydraulics", so we can hop that front wheel all the way down the block. We cannot forget to add a boombox mount so everyone can hear us bumping as we ride down the block, with out tinted sunglasses and our gin and juice in hand.

....wait...um...no :p

I love lowrider bikes! Becuase they were born on the *street* and not hyped by the huge bike manufactures who push all kinds of *bike bling* on cyclists. Come on folks, why would any rider need a wheel with less than 32 spokes, unless the're racing? Carbon seatpost or other spendy parts? 99% of all the high tech, light weight, racing bike gear is bought by guys who have no real need for it. Bike shops are full of bling bling you don't need but buy anyway (I'll admit to this ;) )

Please don't bash on Mexican kids tricking out some bike if you happen to own a pair of sunglasses that cost more than 10 bucks. At least lower rider bikes have art to them.... besides a load of dough, how much creativity does buying a $4,000 racing bike and matching US Postal kit take?

Is it illegal to ride drunk or if not drunk, drink while riding?

My young son thinks spinner wheels would be cool and that is good enough for me.

I have been trying to think of a way to make them.

Thanks for the link to a vendor, but it looks like they aren't available yet.

Let me know if anybody knows of some actual bicycle spinner wheels available on the market.

Ah yes the commuter rig of, DOOM!

http://www.imz-ural.com/

Patrol and Gear Up are the ones with the engagable sidcar wheel for offroadin' mayham.
I think all of the new ones in the USA come with the 750 now(a much improved engine design not just bigger).

Quite a few folks look for used 650 engined machines (they're cheaper and the engines often worn out) and put a small diesel engine in them, ending up with a 100+ miles to the gallon they claim(I think 80+ would be a good hedge on that bet)

Spinners, no matter if they're for a motorcycle or a car/truck, have the weight of the spinning part equally distributed-- the bearings are at the rim, not the hub. There's no polar inertia.

Geez, a lot of people here who can't get past practicality. Spinners sound fun to me, practical or not. I'm about as midwest conservative as you can get but also live in an area where you see a lot of spinners and fast 'n furious types.

I wouldn't want to ride spinners for a serious ride, but it would be fun for something to take around the block. Think about what a wheel like that would do in a cross wind! Yikes! And I thought my Spinergy Rev X wheels were bad!
