I don't have a mountain bike nor am I planning on getting one.

I was just wondering the average weight of a mountain bike? I ride road bikes and expensive ones can be 18 lbs or lighter. I'm riding an ok one and it's 24 lbs.

22 pounds is pretty damn light MTB bike!!, i say around 25 - 26 to be more realistic , otherwise they can be as heavy as they want

22 pounds for a nice lightweight hardtail, my Trek 4300 is 23 pounds, after all of the upgrades.

Yeah I agree with qwhunt23. 22 Pounds is a good lightweight hardtail mountain bike. My Haro is 40 but more of a Freeride/Downhill bike. So probably anywhere from 25-45 pounds.

I saw a 17 pounder on a web page somwhere. looked like you would break it by riding over a pebble but it was still 17 pounds... Single speed I believe, that would help.

Do you have a list of upgrades? I am wondering how the hell you got that bike to 23lbs...

Back in the 1980s, a guy built a touring MTB, capable of hauling campoing loads off-road, and that weighed in at 22lbs.
I think most MTBs are built for the worst-case scenario, ie over-weight newbie riders with little skill, riding extreme jumps. If you are lighter, can ride well and avoid Kamikaze descents and Big Air, you can ride much lighter bikes.

My mtb weighs in at 35lbs right now. Im sure I could make it lighter but I like it the way it is right now.

BTW here is a 16lb hardtail mtn bike

"shaved away Disc adapter"

"20g of grease"

Thats extreme. I think this guy has gone over the edge.

Most entry level MTN bikes(specialized hardrock, trek 4300, GT avalanche 3.0 etc) weigh in around 30 lbs.

Don't forget the need for loads of cash. With enough money just about anything can be done.

My Hardrock weighs in at about 27lbs now.

There is a list of components on that site.

If you think that is light take a look at the road bikes :)

I see 60+ downhill bikes all the time. Some Downhill forks weigh in at around 10 lbs. Insane I tell you.

While I don't see them all the time. With a BMW and a Monster T and then all steel parts...it is feasible.

There is no real average weight. It depends what the cost range is. For every range there are different weights. Also, it depends on if the bike is 1x1, hardtail rigid, fully, etc etc. For some light bikes, check out www.light-bikes.com (http://www.light-bikes.com)

10lbs fork!!. If you skilful enough to ride trails without sus, you can pare that down below 700g for a full carbon Pace fork.
They do lots of other lightweight goodies as well.

Maybe nice for some XC, but do you really think that would hold up to a heavy downhill course or freeriding? The carbon would probably just snap after the first hit.

10lbs fork is for doing 20 ft drops and higher...not REALLY meant for normal people haha

although I know heavy riders who use it for normal DH...they are just strong and consistent :)

My nekkid steel rigid is 22 heaviest, 19 with the swap of a few parts\ remove luxury items.

Sacrifices: front derailler, shifter, 2 chainrings..well the 46 got the teeth ground off as a bashring. Paint. Doodads..gone.
Sub 22 lbs you only need one or two chainring.

Luxury items: bottle cage\ bottle, rear slash guard, 1 rear reflector, 1 headlamp. Maybe 1 lb.

My raleigh Talus weights in at about 28lbs, with accessories I'd say about 26lbs as sold.

For all reference it's basically an XC bike...tough as all hell too.

Quite a bit I would imagine. The shipping alone would be pricey, they don't sell them in America. The full XTR group is also a very expensive item. If you find anything out about that, let me know.

maelstrom: The weight is wonderful doing 40mph over babyhead sized rocks and roots :) it really feels like you could ride through a trainwagon... 11" travel in the front and 13" in the rear.

See the difference in size compared to a 17" stinky -> http://www.pinkbike.com/modules/photo/?op=view&image=219369

Hahaha...I would love to play on your bike but my dh bike gets a lot of xc on it to. If I had a pure dh bike I would gladly use a super heavy bike...

You ride platekill? (I assume as bmx was basically made for that bike destroying area)

This is related to the weight theme:
does anyone know a site which states the weights of bikes - hardly any manufacturer sites seem to do it, only Haro in my experience. Google rearely comes up with answers either.
Thanks

From the simpsons.

CAR DEALER: Hey you know you want this car...
HOMER: Man it looks sweet.

3 sniper Shots by mobsters miss homer and hit the car

HOMER: Hey what are those holes?
CAR DEALER: Speed holes, you know makes the car go faster.
HOMER: Oh yeah...I'll take it!

Or something along the lines of that.
