(For clarity, this is for Howzit)
I can remember listening to the Tour in the 70's and the word "listen" is almost an exaggeration. TV telecast of the Tour? How about five minutes every evening with my Dad, hunched over a BBC radio broadcast that faded in and out. I've since endured Phil, Paul, Craig Hummer, Bobke, Frankie, Kirsten Gumm, John Tesh, Sam Posey....I'm counting my good fortune. Those were the most enjoyable days of my entire cycling life, those five minutes of inspiration each day provided a summer of good fun with my best riding companion ever. I'd sprint him for city limit signs pretending it was a stage finish, and I'd win (OK, so he let me....once in a while). I'd climb some cheesy little town hill and pretend it was the Galibier, hanging onto his wheel like I was defending the polka dot jersey.
Some day you'll grow up.
BTW, I'd give anything to have him back again. Enjoy the Tour.
I didn't bother to read this whole thread, but wanted to say you touched me a little bit there Suzie. I have a 4 year old who means everything to me, and I can only hope she will feel this way about me some day.
Phil and Paul are jsut doing their job and giving the masses what they want. You get the same thing in just about any sport when there is someone with huge name recognition.
Has anyone here ever watch MotoGP coverage, or should I say Valentino Rossi coverage? I've seen races where he was in 7th place on shredded tires with no chance of even making the podium much less winning the race and you have to check the crawler to see who is in first because the camera and the announcers are up his butt.
You know, Bill Gates has one of the biggest funded foundations, Oprah has her foundations and charities, Tiger Wood, Micheal Jackson and pretty much every super star out there.
Even Carlos Sastre has charities to help kids with Down Syndrome, Parkinson's Disease and Asthma he has charities for Malaria for kids in Africa.
Its called tax breaks. Wake up.
Not saying its not a great thing, and it definitely helps, in fact it helps a lot, I just wanted to point out that it comes down to business, promotion and above all Tax strategy. But of course you knew that.
No, it's not a "Tax Strategy" in the US. Money you donate to a charity reduces your taxable income, just as if you didn't earn the money in the first place. You do not come out ahead by donating money.
Paul and Phill Ligget are SELLOUTS!!!
you need to learn the difference between 'has-been hacks' and sellouts.

Wow, massive history fail (http://french.about.com/od/bastilleday/Bastille_Day_French_Independence_Day_14_July_Le_Quatorze_juillet.htm)
Sorry, but there is no French independence day. Look at a history book next time you want to give history lessons. Not "about.com." :roflmao2:
On the bright side, you could work for Versus as a commentator.

It is often referred to as "french independence day" and is considered to be the independence from the monarchy.

Frankly I am piqued that we have not gotten more coverage about William Bonnet. He is a man that demands coverage!
Fixed.
Whether it is correct or not, it is common.

Glad that we are clear that my correcting a common mistake (uttered by Phil and Paul on July 14th) is not quite a "massive history fail."
Au contraire!

So at the end of the day, Lance created Livestrong for tax breaks?
Wow.
Welcome to my ignore list.

Could you also please add me to your ignore list? I'd prefer not to hear you post a gripe about adding me to your ignore list when I also have an opinion that doesn't mesh with yours.

I don't think he was referring to you, but I guess your self importance demands that you be ignored!

If you know nothing about Tax laws, or income brackets, what the top earners in the world make, and how they have to reduce their taxable incomes, i HOPE you add me to your ignore list.
Tiger woods has charities and foundations, Bill Gates has charities and foundations, Oprah has charities and foundations, Donald Trump has charities and Foundations, ALL OF WHICH BENEFIT PEOPLE.
So you think that Lance's foundation somehow puts him apart from Woods, Oprah, Trump, Gates and pretty much anyone making large sums of money.
Stupidity........

Ah yes, the 'count your blessings at least we get to watch LIVE coverage in HD speech'. Thats cool.
Well, I hope when I DO grow up, the commentators will be enough of professionals and not assume that the audience is so absolutely stupid and shallow, that they dont need commentary on the race, but an informational of one rider in a race of 180 as they are doing now.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with both the channel and commentators assuming that the audience is shallow and stupid and dishing out garbage thinking thats what the audience wants. (may it please the court.)

Setting aside Bill Gates, who has an insane amount of money, what Lance Armstrong has done with his foundation is extremely impressive and far exceeds the other people you mention. Its even more impressive when you consider the fact that Lance Armstrong has made much less money than the other people you mention. Welcome to my ignore list.

Geez! Just add him to your ignore list if you don't like what he has to say. Why do people feel the need to announce to everyone else who they are adding? It's stupid. Do you really think the other person cares if you add him to your list or not?

For somebody who doesn't like to hear about Lance you sure talk about him a lot.

Without Phil and Paul the TDF wouldn't be the same. I don't think I'd watch the tour without Phil and Paul.

after reading your posts, it's pretty obvious that you are the target audience for said commentators.

I'm watching it on TG4 and its great commentary. There are no favourites with these lads. Very down to earth and very informative - if you speak irish:)
As an aside I used to be up for Jenson Button in the F1 until the commentators ruined it. Poor old Lewis Hamilton now he doesn't get a look in! Never thought I'd be up for Lewis but he's not that bad when the commentators don't go on about him.
so go to www.tg4.tv and watch it there!

So you decide who you like based on who the commentators are not talking about?

You do know that Howzit is "on vacation" for a bit?

Looks like the bit became permanant. Think he could have come up with a more clever sock name than Howzit1? Not the sharpest tool in the shed I guess...

Forget Phil and Paul in the am; turn it back on in the afternoon and watch it again with someone fun to hear talk........
