Commuting - How do I get 8 golf clubs home in a messenger bag...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
OK, a coworker of mine gave me a set of his old irons and I usually alternate and biked in today. They're old school and really heavy, which isn't that much of a problem. I have a large crumpler laptop messenger bag and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on bringing these clubs home in it like strapping it across the flap or something.
I'd say you should fing some bungee or rope and strap them to the bike. Heavy, bulky objects are a much better deal when carried by the bike, not by you.

I agree with Paul--strap them to the bike. Do you have a rack? If so maybe you could rig them basically straight up on the side of the rack. Otherwise I'd try parallel the top tube, under your leg and out the bag ... maybe 4 per side. Or, maybe a few today, a few tomorrow.
Good Luck! Let us know how you did it. The idea will help someone else down the road.
oops, that was out the back, not bag. tied to the top tube straight back over the back wheel.
good luck again.
I have a specialized hardrock with a compact frame. The top tube slopes down, I'm not really worried about scratching the paint job so I can mount it either way but I'd prefer if the heads were facing forward because all those heads jutting out interfere with my pedaling. I can however, put them with the heads facing foward.
Because of the compact frame, if they're sticking out the back, they'll interfere with the wheels, if they're sticking out the front, they'll interfere with the cables sticking out the handle bar.
I was thinking if I strap it sideways to my messenger bag and have the business end sticking out in traffic, I'm bound to get more respect, I mean who wants their precious paint job/windshield busted by a shiny 9-iron sticking out the side of someone's bike. ;)

Um, if you alternate, just take 'em home tomorrow.

My Timbuk2 bag has straps designed for carrying rolled documents (like blueprints) in a cardboard tube. The tube is strapped on the flap, perpendicular to your torso. Depending on how many clubs you are carrying, you might try rigging a cardboard tube with foam or endcaps to hold the clubs inside the tube while you ride, then you could just use the document roll straps provided. With the clubs protruding from each end of the tube you might get buzzed by cars a little less. Be careful not to take out pedestrians by mistake though.

I have the same bag, watch out if you carry a tube that is much longer than the bag. I've almost removed myself unintensionally from the bike a few times and most peds hate getting a gentle wack on the head as I pass. :D

A 9 iron at 25 mph is more than gentle enough. :D

I think that for carrying something as long as a set of golf clubs in this manner, the law requires a "Wide Load" sign on the tube :) .
