Introductions - Just retired and ready to tour

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just retired from the VA Hospital here in Albuquerque. I'm 62 and have been intermittently biking for many years. Did my first century in '74. I'm planning to do the Transamerica--OR to VA--starting this August. I have a Univega MTB that I've modified here and there. I'll be towing a Yak. Currently taking 20-50 mile training rides in the area with 40# on the Yak. I want to do an on the road journal. Pocketmail, Dell PDA with a folding keyboard and cell phone are some considerations. I also have a laptop and hard case and could carry that. Self supported with camping and cooking 3 out of 4 is my plan. I've found lots of on line journals with CrazyGuyonaBike the best so far. Any advice, comments or suggestions will be appreciated. The picture is my rig while on a training ride here in ABQ.

Wow, It's been a long time since I've seen the Sandias! My wife and I own some property in the Moriarty area that we plan to retire to. A picture like that makes me want to go "home" so bad (originally from Wash State but NM has always felt truly like "home"). Living in Ohio at the moment though. I currently am doing some commuting on my new recumbent. Enjoying it a lot. Good luck on your training and tour! Welcome to the forums!

Just a little advise , at your age , you should be using EPO , a horemone which is made by the kidneys .Its increases your red blood cells and wards dememtia .

Jarhead,
are you serious? I don't think that stuff is legal.

It is prescribed for people with kidney problems . But that doesent mean you cant find it . After the age of 70 , the red blood cell counts fall dramatically . This starves the brain of oxigen and causes dememtia and other nuerological problems . I will use it when the time comes weather or not its legal . Ive cured myself of chronic whiplash . I just bought some rHGH off the net after I did a google exploration . I have a memory impairment and I will also try and cure that with epo .I just dont agree with Drs , No biggie . But the fact is after 70 your red blood cell count plummets . Why not replace it ?

I don't think I ever read your reply--thus the lag. I stopped my tour 60 miles short of Illinois. I have a journal of that tour at srtraveler.crazyguyonabike.com. Day before yesterday I picked up a Challenge Mistral from Angletech in Woodland Park, CO. I put 3 pictures of it on this forum under recumbents in the thread named pictures. Here's one. If you come to NM and bring your bent, let's take a ride together. What are you riding? What's your experience with your bike. I will be touring on mine this summer and fall.
