Commuting - How many bikes do you see on your commute?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm curious. How many fellow riders do you see in a day on your commute? Please mention your city.

Seeing as how I'm in NYC, even though I bike on a particularly desolate patch of road, I'd still guess 10-15. In the busy areas of midtown manhattan? forget about it, you lose count at 50.

Yep, this would be a normal day for me too. Now and then, I see one or two others. Not very often.

Here in Reno, I generally see 3-5 during my afternoon commute home.
In the summer it is 4-5. In the winter 1, but I know there are more (2-3) out there in the winter because I see their tracks in the snow.
That would be in/around Dayton Ohio.
Sigh. That's sad. Where are you @ drroe?

If I see another person on a bicycle they're probably riding for fun not transportation. I ride three miles to work in Opelika, Alabama (pop. 30,000).
And I've never seen anyone else riding a fixed gear, which I've started commuting with.
There's a fair amount of cyclists here, but most of those into bicycle commuting are in neighboring Auburn where the University is at.

I generally see 5-10 other cyclists on the road in San Jose. Most of them are roadies, with a few MTB's thrown in. They span the spectrum: A few are in matching shorts and jerseys, with bikes that weight less than my cranks. Others are poor, riding beaters with no helmets and their lunch hanging from the bars in a shopping bag. Still others are commuters, and then there's me: A dude on a recumbent with his mirrors, an amber strobe, and a red bag.

Not many here. I know they are out there, maybe at different times or routes. I may see another commuter once a month if that.

I live in New Jersey and commute into New York City. In my neighborhood, the only people riding to work are poor Mexicans going crosstown because there are no buses that head in that direction. People think I'm broke and down to my last cent but that's the attitude of this car culture where the cyclist is considered a broken loner.
When I arrive in New York City, there are so many bike commuters, as one poster made a point, you'll lose count real fast.

There are 3 guys I usually see every day on the commute - 1 in the morning, the other 2 in the afternoon. On a busy day I've seen up to about 7 or 8.

L.A. To be fair, though, I don't commute every day, as I'm a consultant. But on a commute to a client from Brentwood to Beverly Hills I see no one.

Hmmmmm.....to live in the Bay Area.
From my house in Oakland to the shuttle I see about 3-4 on comfort bikes.
On the shuttle over the Bay Bridge there is 10-14 of us, mostly messengers and a few office types like me.
Then from downtown SF to the Golden Gate Bridge I'll see another 15-20, some casual, some hardcore roadies.
Over the Golden Gate Bridge and into Sausalito I see another 6-8 roadies plus a handful of tourists on rentals.
All told about 40-50 each way. Maybe 1/3 are regular faces (ok, really I mean regular bikes, I can tell the bikes apart much easier than the riders...) and the rest rotate.
Just ride...

Sometimes my work commute takes me home on Saturday mornings..That is when all the clubs are out...Of course, few of them are commuters...But on Saturday am, i might see 50 to 100....Normal work day...2-5.
My commute to work starts at about 3 PM..Coming back about 6:45 AM...So not normal work hours, I think..
My commute is between Fallbrook and Temecula. One semi rural and the other suburban...
very rarely.....most of the guys I see are on 10 speeds with the handlebars flipped over and wearing cowboy boots.....

It depends. If I just ride directly from Curtis Park to the Capitol, I'll see 3 or 4. If I take a detour or pre-work training ride on the American River Bike Trail, it could be 30 or 40.

It varies between the morning and the afternoon. In the morning there are 5-10, in the afternoon there it is more like 15-20. My route is along a heavily used trailway and I think the additional afternoon people are out exercising versus commuting.

2-3 (and the same 2 or three people). One always coasting down the coblestone street near City Hall (at least he resembles a commuter). Albany NY
Not a commuting spot, but I did see a fully loading tandem over the weekend. Man I wonder where they were going. at least five panniers.

Off subject: How does the shuttle work? Can one get from the East Bay to the West at any time? Does it cost anything? When I lived in Marin and commuted to Richfield, I never biked. Maybe I should have looked into it?

I only see 3 or 4 and commute on the designated route through E.Sac to the capitol. Very disapointing. I never see another fixed gear unless I see a messenger. Sacramento is an ideal city for bike commuting, flat and good weather (except for the heat).
Cheers
I easily see one to two dozen cyclists or more each day on my 3 mile commute, it doesn't matter what time of year, and I ride at an off-peak hour (~8:45 to 9:00 AM). It's gotten so bad in the bike lane on the Hawthorne Bridge viaduct that they really need to install a second bike lane for passing... :D

Working at four different offices a week it depends which way I go. But anywhere from 5-15. I've never really counted. The city of Minneapolis claims there are over 1000 year around bike commuters and you can double that or more in the summer. It's hard to find a parking place in the summer downtown because all the racks are full. That figure the city gives doesn't count the ones coming from the suburbs and that's where I'm coming from. It's very bike friendly with miles and miles of trails and bike lanes.

Depends when and where on my commute. I work on sundays too and late evening, sometimes at night. I'm outside usual commuting hours so here goes...
- 10 to very crowded on the bike path.
- 3 to 10 in the residential streets
- Usually none in the industrial area, sometimes one or two.
Sweet!

I live in Seattle but work from home most fo the time except for those days I'm called away to the corporate office (average a day every week). My commute consists of either a crawl across the hallway from the bedroom to my home office or a 30 mile ride in a car at 0430 to the airport where I wait for a two-hour flight to the Bay Area. However, when home on the weekdays and I do my early morning rides or my after-work ride, I will see countless commuters. I would have to estimate somewhere in the 50-100 range depending on how long I stay out. According to SDOT (http://www.ci.seattle.wa.us/transportation/bikefacts.htm)...
Number of cyclists biking to/from the downtown central business district between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Sept. 20, 2000: 1,737

I occasionally see one. The other day one of the club rides went by me and there were probably 15 people in the group. The average is less than one though.

Nashville, southwest part of town. (West End/Harding)
I really only see other people out for a cruise
in the afternoons, although I know of two others
that commute at different times from me.
Although it would be good to have a little strength in
numbers, I have to admit that it's nice to have the
road "to myself", because I always end up wanting to go
faster than other commuters on the rare occasion I
encounter them. Just like in a car, hah.
20, sometimes more on a busy day.
13km (8 miles?) round trip.
Just the one under me, and maybe 2 or 3 lower income people riding on the sidewalks on a Huffy or whatever.

Only 1-2 actively riding as I bike ~2 mi from Bloomfield to Oakland
But racks are usually full around the hospital complex, especially in warmer weather
Everything from fixies to brand spankin' new MTBs
Currently punting around on a Raleigh c40 myself
Relatively unfriendly bike town: narrow roads, door ambushes, fast traffic, unpredictable driving

Olympia, WA (60 miles South of Seattle, WA & 110 miles North of Portland, OR) Population 42,000
My commute is 4 miles each way, 6-6:20 AM & 3:30-3:50 PM. Besides the 3 other commuters in my office, I see 0-5 a day through the Fall, Winter & early Spring; then from 5-20 or more a day during the warm months. Depends on the weather as rain seems to drive them inside. We also have a sizeable group of transients in town & many get around on old road bikes.

The bay bridge shuttle makes 3-4 trips in the morning and evening during the time period that one cannot take a bike on BART. It only runs from MacArthur Bart to the Transbay Terminal in the financial.
Going from Marin to Richmond(?) and vice-versa over the San Rafeal/ Richmond Bridge, the best option is Golden Gate Transit buses. And as a concession to fewer route times, there is a program that if no bike space is available on the front rack (2 bike limit) or inside (the only route that one can take a bike inside) the driver gives you a taxi voucher and calls a cab to take you and your bike across!

Uptown Toronto. On my commute I see 1 person on my way home at night, 10:30. The ride is through side streets thought. In the day I would say hundreds of people commute. T.O. seems to be very cycle friendly. Threre are lots of bike lanes across the city and alternative routes marked for bikes to take to avoid heavily trafficed areas.

Ames, Iowa. It's a university town, so I see a lot of students when classes are in session. Probably 10-20 on my 6 mile commute this time of the year.
At least 30-50 a day, really varying (I work third shift, so the ones at night could be going out to the bars or coming home from work) A lot of them are poorer people on X-mart bikes, but I don't start off in a very affluent neighborhood...

In the morning, usually none. I saw another commuter once a few weeks ago, and I haven't seen her since. In the afternoon, maybe two or three commuters, many more sportsman or recreational folks. When I'm off my bike is when I see the commuters. When I see them I always comment "go dude! go!", and my girlfriend rolls her eyes.
There's at least two-three other bikes on the rack at work, though. One guy I know rides a Walmart MTB bike 12 miles each way in street clothes (but he does use the bus racks, too). Another one is a beautiful chrome finnish Cannondale touring bike, (T800 maybe?) decked out with a rack and fenders, and it's beautiful!

Anywhere from none to eight or ten, depending on when I ride. At work, I see a score or more commuter bikes parked.
Every 3 or 4 commutes I see a recreational rider in the morning. Every 10 or so commutes I see another commuter. I do see 2 bike commuters around 6:00 AM when I am walking my dog.
When I drive to work I leave later in the morning and I see an occasional commuter.
Well I am usually lucky to see just one on my way to/from work. I saw one today...probably since I read this thread.... ;0) Since I started commuting in Oct. '03 I have seen about 5 different commuters on my normal route.

On the bike path out of Sellwood into downtown Portland I see about 15-20 bikers. Crossing the Hawthorne bridge another 15 or so. Riding north on the waterfront I see about 30 bikers. So all together around 50-60 bikers each way. Like randya said, these numbers don't really change when it's raining.

I commute from southwest to northwest Portland and my experience differs -- I encounter 20-30 during the summer, and 5 or less during the winter. I recognize 2 year-long commuters (which, I've never met over the years, but I almost feel like I know them since I see them so often) that I see every day going the opposite direction.

On a good day, 2-3. A lot of days, zero. I live in the western burbs of Chicago and commute from Warrenville to Downers Grove. A lot of days I see people out for their evening road training ride, especially lately.
How is Cleveland for riding and commuting? I thinking of taking a job in Strongsville.

You couldn't be more right. :D Actually, Downers Grove is not all that bad but I haven't been back there in a few years. I do know that the traffic and congestion was getting pretty bad when I was growing up in Naperville in the 1980s. I still have a lot of family in that area.
