Depends how bad the paint is. Post a few pics.

And also.... don't expect the paint on a 30-year-old bike to be perfect. I have a lot of chips and scratches on my '73 Varsity, but the blinding chrome tends to minimize those and people say how great the bike looks.
Even if the paint is in terrible shape, wearing off, etc., you can clean it up as best you can and then clearcoat it to seal it to stop the deterioration.
