do you know Friday's ride destination?
I checked the times-up.org site but they skip this month's description.

We did our first critical mass here in Wichita last month, 5 people showed up including me. Tomorrow at 7 pm we r gonna do the next, meeting at main library. Hoping for 6 people. :P
Got to start someplace.
I actually heard they are having one here today at 6pm. I guess it's spreading. I don't know if I'm going to go or not. It sounds interesting but if they start holding intersections and all that crap that wouldn't be cool. I guess these things when they start out small are good for cyclists because they are attended by cyclists but then they grow and all the hippies show to rebel against the man and start acting like dumbasses. I think that's when these things go bad. When non cyclists start showing up and viewing it as a party or a reason to act stupid.

The kids that started this are trying to be cool about it and not piss anyone off. The specifically asked me not to flip anyone off.

why have a critical mass in a town where traffic isn't a problem? i understand the
idea in a big city where alternatives to sitting in a parked/engine running car more
often than driving it are needed, but in a small town? what's the point?

so you can go for a ride and show off your shiny chrome and oogle hot girls, of course.
Just because a place is small doesn't mean that we don't need bicycle advocacy. People are ignorant all over and even in small places people should be aware of alternate options or at least reminded they need to respect people that choose an alternative form of transportation. That being said, I don't agree with a lot of the things that CM does and am not sure that will happen here. But often if there is a cause a stinkie obnoxious hippie can't be far behind. That is what will ruin the advocacy and just turn it in to a waste of time that pisses everybody off. More power to those that make people aware of cycling as an option but the others who disrupt everything and get everybody pissed off at cyclists can go to hell because when they put their bike away until next month's CM I'll be dealing with all the people they pissed off on the roads.

MKRG hit the nail on the head. I actually feel a lot safer riding around boston than I do riding around some of the backroads of my hometown in southeastern mass. sure there are a lot of ****heads in cities, but they're at least used to seeing bikes on the street. small town gear heads love to wizz right by you in there frickin' IROC without giving you any room.
so having one in a small town could still be pretty effective. you just won't meet as many vegan scenesters to try and score with.

Lame ass question: What really is a critical mass? How did the name CM came about?

I was too busy cleaning out the carbs in my motorcycle. So I didn't go to the CM. Put down 15 miles getting the stuff I needed. Going 15 more after dinner.

i'm not sure, but i believe the term 'critical mass' was used to describe people in japan crossing busy intersections. they would wait til they had enough to force themselves across.. i.e. a critical mass.

I know of Critical Mass, but since I'm about the ONLY Right-winger in NYC, I've never attended one of them.
Anyway, I saw the Critical Mass passing by Times Square tonight as I got out of the theater after watching Dodgeball (cool cameo by Lance)... riding in the pouring rain.
What's with all the noise (yelling and screaming) though, were they chasing Sean Hannity out of town?

I was going, but decided to go back home when it started pouring, thinking that not many people would show up anyways. I wonder if there was a big showing.
id love to critical mass in cincy
If they have it again, it should be the last friday of this month at 6pm in that park in clifton at the pond. I forgot what the park is called but I would recognize the name if someone said it. I don't know how it turned out last month, or if it even happened. I just heard about it from some cat in Northside Tavern.
i dont live in cincy anymore, im in nyc now. but thanks anyways :)
