I unplugged my computer becasue I heard that lightning can cause a power surge that can fry your computer. I won't answer a landline phone.

Yes, that's paranoia.

paranoid? yes.
True about lightning frying unprotected electronics? yes
True about lightning traveling over phone lines? yes

Is this a record for thread derailment? 2 on topic posts and then abusive (but insightful) character assasination.

Abusive? Just how thin skinned are you getting, coasting? Now go count the change in your penny jar. :innocent:
tie a knot in your power cord.
do you also not wash your hands during thunderstorms?
I can understand not taking a shower or bath during thunderstorms.
I have seen the damage caused by lightening strikes first hand, as I have spent alot of time on sailboats in Texas.
Once, we had lightening strike the mast of a Moore 24 that was used to teach sailing school at the marina. The energy melted switches into unrecognizable masses of plastic and metal, blew gauges out of the instrument panel and blew the insulation off of wiring, leaving just bare wire.
The sound of the strike, which was about 100 feet from my office, was a physical, deafening force and you could smell the ozone or whatever in the air.
I would not trifle with lightening.
Now which one of you is going to brink my car down from the car park?
*holds out parking ticket and $7*

Yes, but you need to use the "statistical" factor.
It's like lying awake at night worrying some drunk will drive in through your bedroom wall and run over you.

Oft times, lightening will go to ground through the copper plumbing lines. I would suggest you replumb the house with PEX immediately.

you're all trying to scare me, aren't you?
many stories of people getting electrocuted in their showers or baths during a thunderstorm.
I'll hope the tap does it too.
or peeing at the wrong time, it does travel up the stream, as mythbusters proved :innocent:.
Fema's stance on lightening (http://www.fema.gov/hazard/thunderstorm/index.shtm). I think that lightening should be federally regulated and that Mother Nature be held liable for her little luminous indiscretions.

Armified it for ya.
What? Using a tap is dangerous too? I'll have to watch this too.Are you kidding? The simple act of inhaling creates a large low-pressure, electrically-charged area right in front of your face that severely amplifies your chances of being struck by lightning.

I hear that riding at 88 mph with a big hook on your back during a lightning storm can be rather entertaining.

We unplug the computers during thunderstorms as well. We figure that we can't afford to replace them, and we could do without them every now and then, so having a forced time out is good :-)
The phone thing just doesn't come up - I don't use it very often. I think I've made three calls this month - one credit card, and two for getting the internet sorted out.
I do shower although it is normally quick, and I do ride home - as long as it isn't too close.

how comes dogs are scared of thunder storms? If an intruder breaks in, a dog will jump him and I would scream like a little girl. Yet a bit of thunder and dogs get all scaredy cat.

Signs that lightning has struck you.....
You hear the bang and see the flash at exactly the same moment
Your hair is standing on end
You vaguely remember standing over there about 200 feet, and your Reebocks weren't melted to your feet.
You smell BBQ, and you aren't at a cookout or near a restaurant
