Road Cycling - RX100 sti durability

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a set of 8 speed rx100 sti shifters with about 1500 miles on them. Does anyone have these and how long will they hold up? I know that rx100 is not top of the line but they look much better than the 600s or dura ace for that matter. Trying to resist going to 9 speed for as long as possible.

I'm in a similar position; I have four bikes with 8 speed levers, and I ain't
changing to 9 speed 'til all the levers die.
I have some 8 speed RX100 levers, but I bought them brand new only 18
months ago, so I can't exactly tell you how long they'll last, however...........
I have two sets of 8 speed 105s, and all the guys in all my local bike shops say
that the inside of 105s are the same as the RX100s. They also say the 1990s
Shimano stuff was made much better than the new stuff. My 105 levers are
only just starting to die, and I estimate that I've got over 30,000 miles on
each pair, mainly on flat roads!!
Anyone who thinks the 90's 600 levers are better than anything new must have eaten paint chips as a child... they were some of the worst STI's, ever by most accounts. Every LBS seems to have an ample supply of them in their used parts bin I've noticed... my new-ish 9spd Tiagras are nice with my 600 derailleur though!

G'day,
I have just upgraded my much loved RX100 Gruppo on my training bike after doing about 40,000 km (25,000 miles) on it without to many problems. You won't have any problem with the durability provided you service it regularly,
cheers,
Hitchy

I agree. Like I said, I got at least 45,000km out of my old Shimano 105 8-speeds.

If you keep them clean and don't crash, they will probably still be going when you decide to get rid of the bike.

Thanks for the replies , I feel alot better about keeping these for the long haul. They shift smoothly and are in mint condition. I need to pay less attention to marketing gimmicks ,and high end gruppo snobs.
