Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm new to fixed gear riding, having built my 80s celeste Bianchi into a fixed commuter about two months ago. How long have you been riding fixed gear bikes?

I built my first one last December. I can't ride anything else now, coasting feels very unnatural.

I wish I'd added an option for those with more than two years but less than five. Sorry.
I'll ask a moderator to change the top option from more than five years to more than two years.

I used to ride fixed for a couple of hundred miles every spring as part of training back in the mid 1980s.
I've been riding fixed exclusively now for about a year, but that's because it works best when riding with just one leg.
It's been since 98 for me. 5 years or so. I have only ever owned 1 geared bike in my life and I tired of that in a few months.

2-3 months for me. But I have ridden SS for over 10 years before I switched to gears. Rode gears for 5 or so years and finally I am back to having no gears. Like the fixie stuff better than SS.

I built my first SS in the spring of 2002 and did the FG thing I think either that summer or fall. Now it has gotten way out of hand, as I am sure all of you can understand. Just come over and take a look at my basement, you will get a good idea what I mean. I remember a couple of years ago, I actually had plans to get my license and learn how to drive, now I cannot imagine dealing with that stress.

I rode a friend's fixie one day. We did a 12 mile loop. I was in love!!!
I had him convert a Motobacane Nomade to a 42 x 18t (63") and have
been riding mostly fixed ever since. That bike has since been redone.
That was about two years ago. I currently have four fixed-geared bikes:
The Nomade now has a 52 x 18t
The Motobacane Mirage runs a 52 x 16t
The Van Dessel has a 44 x 16t
and my newest (ridable as of yesterday) is a Schwinn Le Tour with a 42 x 16t.
I'm working on a Lotus Elan now. It will run either a 52 x 19t or a 42 x 15t, depending on the hub and chain line.
My longest fixie ride was 67 miles over lots of hills in North Carolina on the VanDessel.

depends on if you count my Murray banana seat bike or not: if so, then about 5 years; if not, then about 1/2 a year
