Professional Cycling - Type of riders in the Tour de France

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

As a new fan to this sport I am hooked so much so I get up at 8 a.m. to watch each stage.
Anyways I was wondering about the type of cyclists you have in the tour de france and more detail about the roles of each one.
So I am assuming there are only 4 types.
Climbers
Sprinters
Time trialists
Hybrids
Are there anymore that I need to be aware of?
Also do you think Cancellera will beat Lance in the mountains, I think Lance is in great position seeing as though he almost beat Cancellera in his specialty with the TT.
Thanks

I don't know think that Cancellara can climb with Armstrong. Then again, when the hammer falls I have doubts about Armstrong being able to climb with Contador.
As for the rider types you listed, yes, that's about right. There are also riders who don't really excel at any of those disciplines but are very capable of just putting their head down and working working working. I couldn't climb for crap, couldn't sprint but had the mentality where I could put a lot of work in to try and close gaps. I may have made a decent TT.
Every member of a team has their role. Whether it be to win the race, lead out the designated sprinter or carry water.

True. I am not concerned about LA's ability but his ability to sustain that ability against a rider with less wear and tear.

It's all about fast twitch vs slow twitch, and the cardio to do
both well. :)
