Introductions - For lack of a better title - Introduction

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

An introduction now, is it? We;;, lets see....

Hi, I'm Chuck. I'm 62, and rode a bike for 42 of them. I haven't been able to ride for the last eight years and though I've survived somehow, the feeling of loss hasn't lessened one bit in those eight years. Not that it matters but I was one of those rare cases where a knee replacement went bad. After multiple surgeries, the bottom line is that when I try to ride, I fall before I can get the pedals turning.

My riding when I did it was local touring and training, mostly solo. My goal was to ride as many late summer and fall centuries as I could get to, and everything else was training. My ride of choice was a Sekai 18-speed, but like many riders, I had several others of just about every type.

So now, every July I watch every minute of the Tour de France that I can, read bicycle books and cycling magazines, and occasionally help other folks work on their bikes.

Otherwise, I'm a retired computer network amd tech support manager and VERY amateur musician whose other web hangouts are Irish Music, pennywhistle and high school football sites. And a fisherman - always that.

As for what drew mw to the Bike Forum, it was research on a classic bike I'm trying to ID for someone else. Having looked around, though, I think I'm going to find exploring this place competely fascinating.

Welcome to the fourms.

Have you ever considered a recumbent trike for your cycling addiction? Could be just the ticket to get you out and pedaling again.

Thanks.

With a two wheel recumbent, I have the same issue. Lack of motion in my right knee won't let me get the pedals turning quickly enough. I am currently looking at several options, the most critical being dropping the extra weight I put on after I quit riding.

Also, though, I've noticed an older man in town riding a recumbent TRIcycle. I'm not talking about the old-lady tris that look like a blown-up child's toy, but a true recumbent with his body mass between and ahead of a pair of large driver wheels with a single smaller steering wheel way out front. I haven't been able to ask him about it, but I keep meaning to ask my bike shop.

I've also been told there are hand-crank driven recumbents but my web searches and inquiries have so far been fruitless. Lastly, I have, through my own efforts, been able to get a LITTLE motion in my right knee - maybe 20 degrees. I THINK that I could manage a very short-shanked crankset, if such a thing even exists.

I have a feeling that any viable option could get pretty expensive.
