Trying to figure a route out coming from Belmar down Route 70 south of Fort Dix straight through Lebanon State Forest. Then going up 206 and onto Monmouth Road back up to Freehold. Does anyone know the condition of the shoulders on these roads for riding? Thanks

I'd stay off Rt. 70. Fast traffic, not a well maintained shoulder. Other opinions may vary. I've never ridden it, that far west. Consider Pasadena Rd. becomes Savoy Blvd. a left-right jog becomes Chatsworth Tabernacle Rd. continue straight to 206 in Medford Lakes. There's even a marked bike lane. Big dump trucks, traveling at highway speed, but the shoulder/bike lane is pretty smooth. You'll pass south of the forest. Mt. Misery Rd. turns to dirt/sand. Not sure about Buckingham Rd. Both go through the forest. Boring flat, by the way. The forest roads would be more fun. Note that pine trees do not make for much shade.

I don't know about 206. Another major road. Monmouth Rd.--I doubt there's a shoulder. I believe it's rideable, but I would and have skirted it. Here's a route I did last winter. I don't think there was a shoulder on any roads but the one past McGuire AFB.

This was MANY years ago, but I used to ride 206 only for short distances while connecting to other roads. If memory serves me, most of the back roads through the Pine Barrens are good riding. Stay off the highways.

i dont do my riding on rt 70 but i do know thw road from drivng company trucks.
the road is prime realestate for people with lead right feet.
for some reason people cant help but drag race on it.
on two separate mornings in the past couple years i was stuck in traffic as the scraped some kid off a tree from driving too fat the night before.
my 2 cents

My daily commute includes eleven miles on Route 70. It's shoulder has a higher than average collection of detritus, small and very annoying rocks, scattered bits of small mammals and terrible drivers. I haven't died yet, but I keep my eyes open.
