Pacific Northwest - AAA Oregon/Idaho tows bikes now!

Hi all, just heard from the grapevine. AAA Oregon/Idaho tows bikes...yep...check it out.

I'm already a plus member and I could've sure used them a month ago. Good news for us bikers.:love:

UGGGH!!! This is so messed up!! I'm up in washington right now (I live in portland) and I clicked on your link. Redirected me to the washington page. Tried to enter it manually, same deal. Tried to just get to the opening "oregon/idaho" page... nope. This is kinda annoying/creepy/big-brother-ish (I know AAA isn't teh guv'ment but still).

This whole thing is messed up. It will cost an extra $60 per year to have this service, a patch kit is $2. So you break a chain, and a big tow truck comes to get you? Makes no sense, call a friend or family, or put out your thumb. Another PR stunt by the AAA, and preying on people's insecurity.

Take the time to learn basic bike repair, be self sufficient.

If you already have AAA plus it doesnt cost anymore, and i think this would have been handy to know last week when i broke a brake bridge 30 miles out. I would have rather gotten picked up than ride back with one brake.

You need AAA Plus to get the service, that is $60 more than standard. You can't ride 30 miles with one brake??? Practice, it might come in handy when you are riding out of cell zones, and it's not really that hard.

I can ride 30 miles with one brake and I did, but I would rather have not had to.
As I stated above "if you already have AAA plus" which most people I know who get AAA usually do for the 100 mile towing, then it can come in handy.
What if you break a few spokes while you are out there away from help? You could hitch back to civilization, it may even be faster, but to admonish the service based on the idea that you could get by without it is like saying you dont need antiseptics for a wound because you have a good immune system.
Maybe it's not worth paying another $60 for, but I didn't even know I had this service until I read it here.

I agree with PDXAero. I've got AAA plus with the RV option because I want to be sure I won't get stuck somewhere even while towing my trailer. I used my AAA membership about a year ago when, coming home from a job interview, my full-sized van broke down on Southbound 405. AAA sent out a flatbed truck that winched the van up onto it and dropped it and me off at the service station all the way down in Burien. I can't begin to imagine what that would have cost if I hadn't had the service. As it was, I didn't pay anything more than my annual fee. For me, for the peace of mind knowing that I can take advantage of something like that, AAA is well worth the money. Of course, I'm the kind of guy who carries a patch kit, a small toolkit, zip ties, duct tape, and spare tubes on every ride.

I can only think of a couple of times I might have used this kind of a service. However, this week my wife is going out of town for 2 weeks. If something catastrophic happens to me on a ride during the next 2 weeks, I'll have to walk. Brakes and flats aren't the only failures you can have while riding. Have you ever had a frame break? How about a bottom bracket disintegrate? Ever break a seat post? Walking into an area with cell coverage is probably going to be a much shorter walk than walking all the way home.

I just can't believe what I'm reading here, but what ever. I guess I never thought I'd see the day when cyclist would need AAA. Whatever.

Do this....log onto www.aaa.com/stop. enter your zip code in wa and that will take you to aaa washington. Basically, it clears your cookies.

Yes, a tow truck comes and gets you...they added bike racks to their rigs.

It's an added benefit to the plus if you already have it...I think they might come out with a reduce rate for just bike towing, but for now the plus covers you in any vehicle, bikes, motorcycles. Sure most bikers can fix a flat, no problem you're on your way but for major breakdowns this would be handy. Yeah, you can call family and friends but why not call aaa if you have it?
