Foo - And I thought my dog was stupid...

The girl and I often joke at how stupid my Shih Tzu is but this gives me hope she isn't the dumbest dog out there.

The picture reminds me of this very elderly asthmatic pomeranian at a house I was visiting once; no haircut so total puffball, and she went to walk between a chair leg and table leg and got stuck. She pushed for a while, grunting, and then just gave up and stood there waiting.

Our bedroom has doors on opposite ends. My one dog can't figure out that if one door is closed she could walk around to the other side. This happens if she is outside or inside the bedroom. Apparently, she lives in a 2D world. It's just sad.

my sister's smart dog figured out that she can get a bone away from the other dog by distracting him with a squeaky toy to get his interest, backing away a bit at a time, then dropping it on the other side of the room. The funny part is that she successfully applied this tactic to distract my brother-in-law from his dinner plate, which was sitting on a low coffee table.

Its a shih tzu...all their brains were bred out many years ago, kind of luck many of my co workers.

Not true at all. Our two are quite bright, and were a breeze to train.

I'm not saying my little girls would score well on the SAT, but they figure things out pretty well, were quick to learn the few little things we worked with them on, and they put the Beagle we had before (who was loyal and sweet, but dumb as a stump) to shame.

It would seem that Shih Tzus score in the top ten when it comes to dumbest but they are at the bottom of that list... Afghan Hounds seem to be considered to be the stupidest dog there is.

AFWIW - Border Collies are the smartest.

I have a a Shih Tzu and a Miniature Pinscher... I should rename them Pinky and the Brain.

And Pinky is the sweetest and most affectionate of dogs... she just isn't that bright.

twas a joke. I had no idea shih tzus were in the top ten of dumb dogs....but good to know. I wouldn't want one that can't figure out its time to swim should my sailboat sink.

I would be open to the possibility that she's not dumb, just very tidy, doesn't want to knock down the pepsi cans that the owner so carefully arranged.

My dog is about as smart as I care for her to get. She wouldn't be trapped by (an equivalent sized) soda-can barricade. She's figured out my "trick" of doubling back and sneaking up on her when we chase each other doing laps through the apartment, and even managed to catch me by doing the same thing. She understands that if you put a box or a pail on top of her toy, it hasn't disappeared; it's just under the box/pail and you knock that over to get the toy.

She has not figured out that when my fiancee closes her laptop, it doesn't automatically mean we're leaving the house. Every time the laptop closes, the dog grabs a toy and waits in her crate until she's convinced we're not going anywhere.
She has not figured out that she's tall enough to reach the treats on the counter; even though she stands up on her hind legs and grabs treats from my hand, which I hold higher than and directly in front of the box of treats on the counter.
Like many dogs, she's convinced that her collar is an essential part of herself, and if I take if off of her she looks at it with the same worry as if I removed her tail.
Toys that go under something are easily re-obtained. Toys that go in the closet, for some reason, cease to exist. 2 hours later, they may as well be brand new when I take them back out.
