Touring - LHT Bar Ends & Brake Questions

I purchased a complete LHT earlier this year (2008 Model - Olive Green). The handlebars that came on the bike have a smaller diameter than what a typical road bike. I want to put on new bars.

Will the bar end shifters work okay with a handlebar that has a bigger diameter? Will the brakes handles have any trouble fitting around a bigger diameter bar?

LHT comes with standard sized drop bars. Are you referring to oversized bars on a "typical road bike"? Bar ends will work on a bar with ID of 19-22 mm per Shimano. DOn't know about the hoods on an oversized bar.

Have you considered a second layer of bar tape, if bigger diameter is what you are after?

I was going to change to bars with less reach and drop and just happen to have some bars left over from a previous road bike. So, just curious if the road bars would accomodate the bar end shifters and brake handles since the diameter is larger.

I have small hands and find standard bar diameters much too small for comfort on long rides. Fixed that by adding a layer of foam pipe insulation and then wrapped it in bar tape. Done carefully, it doesn't look bad, last a long time, feels good, and reduces hand problems.

A double layer of wrap will work well too.

My main concern is getting handle bars with less reach. I certainly will build up the wrap if I have to stay with the smaller diameter handle bars.

To my knowledge bar end shifters were originally designed for shifting the gears on road bikes equipped with triathlon style "racks", and it was only later that touring cyclists began using them on the ends of their race handle bars. They are quite tolerant to different diameters due to their construction (see pic.). So there should be no problems for these.

BUT there are different diameters for clamping the handle bar to the stem, i.e. 31.8 mm = oversized (same for MTB + road), 26.0 mm = typically road, 25.4 mm = typically MTB. And to make things worse, there are also some 25.4 mm road handle bars.....

Bar-end shifters predate triathlon bars by probably two decades or so. They have always been tourist's gear.
