Any suggestions for some nice, Gel padded, half finger gloves for under $30?? Not sure what to get for me and my wife. The stuff at the LBS wasn't really that great.

Performance makes some good ones.
Personally I like the PI Attack gloves (http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1015931_-1_36007_20000_37508) that Performance carries.

I like the PI Gel Race half finger gloves. ~$25 IIRC. I get about 2 seasons out of a pair, which I think is a reasonable investment. I don't expect a pair of short gloves to last forever.
I picked up the Specialized Body Geometry gloves for $35 at my lbs this weekend. Yeah, $5 over budget. They seem to be much better built than the PI's I was wearing though.
Here is another vote for the Specialized gloves. I still wear my PI and Performance brand gloves (switch-off gloves every week), but prefer the specialized gloves for longer rides. The gel in specialized gloves is firmer, and does not squish away from where I rest my hands on the bar the most.

I believe half fingered gloves are senseless. First of all for the purpose of keeping you warm, you want your fingers to be covered.
Second reason if you go down, you want your fingers protected too against the road rash.
That said, I wear black mechanix gloves, they work well and you can buy them at any hw store under $20.
