I haven't done either route (yet - I'm doing the TransAm this spring), so my direct experience is limited, but...

The Western Express is probably a few hundred miles shorter, but highway 50 through Nevada and Utah is going to be really hot and dry in the summer. There's not much out there on "The Lonliest Road in America", so bring lots of water and food.

If you're OK with that kind of climate and desolation, then go for it. Personally, I'm looking forward to checking out the small towns along the way and I think highway 50 would be too boring for me.
