Touring - which route?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
i'm trying to decide which cross-country route to take this summer. should i ride the transam va to oregon or ride the western express and end up in san fran instead? is the route much harder? i'm in good shape but am inexperienced? any advice? thanks, mike

I haven't done either route (yet - I'm doing the TransAm this spring), so my direct experience is limited, but...
The Western Express is probably a few hundred miles shorter, but highway 50 through Nevada and Utah is going to be really hot and dry in the summer. There's not much out there on "The Lonliest Road in America", so bring lots of water and food.
If you're OK with that kind of climate and desolation, then go for it. Personally, I'm looking forward to checking out the small towns along the way and I think highway 50 would be too boring for me.
