Southern California - Angeles Crest Century

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Has anyone done this race in the past? Any comments? I am doing it this October. It looks like it should be a good ride.
It's a good ride, indeed. Last year, it rained for most of it, and it was still a good ride. It's no race, though. I've not ridden up there much, so it felt special to me. For those who do ride this area alot, I could see where it'd be somewhat routine.
The route is very pretty, has a bit of climbing, and the support is typical PU: excellent. Hope you like Hammer products! I'm in a for a second go around, as are a few friends. I'm surprised there's still spots available, last year it sold out very quickly.

Wow! This does sound fun. I'll try it this weekend to see if I like it. I've never been up to Jarvi Memorial Vista.
I was gonna start with upper big Tujunga this weekend and go to Newcombs. I even bought bug spray. Too many biting flies at Mt. Wilson.:(
How hard is Angeles Crest compared to Mulholland Challenge?

It's a lot easier than MC. Just go up there and ride it. We go up there many times during the summer.
The rain last year SUCKED!
They might go back to the old route this year now that the road is open to Dawson Saddle.
What's the road where you ride up, and then turn around where it dead-ends? I recall a tunnel (or two?). Is that the one you're saying is now open?

After the tunnels you come to the vista point on Angeles Crest. This is where they had you turn around last year.
Just beyond that point is the turn off to Hwy 39, (gated), and the start of the climb to Dawson Saddle, which was gated for the last 5 years, or so. That gate is now open and you can go to Wrightwood and beyond in a car.
Years ago the AC century turned around at the summit of Dawson Saddle which is why I was thinking they might go back to it now.
Cool, good to know. Are you doing it this year? Might be a bit of a busman's holiday, seeing that you guys go up there all the time...

If I go up there that day it would probably be just to see some friends who are on the ride, which is what I did last year. I'm very careful to avoid PU rest stops and am self-supported.

Understood! Hell hath no fury like...
