Road Bike Racing - Tivo and OLN

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I don't get OLN at home so I'm going to ask my friend who has satellite to record it on Tivo. I’ve never watched their coverage before so I don’t know which session or whatever to record. Based on the schedules below, can anyone offer any input on what you think would be the best? Thanks.

If you just want to see the racing, I'd record about 9-11:45. Sometimes the race runs over OLN's schedule.
If you want to see some more commentary, record 8:30-9 as well.
If you just want to see the sprint finishes, record 11:15-11:30. :D
Here's an OLN/Tivo tip. Don't set up a season pass for The Lance Chronicles or Road to the Tour. Holy Cow! Even setting up the system to record only new programs, in one week I had recorded twelve copies of the same freakin' episode.
Of course, Tivo will be my best friend come next week.

I don’t have a Tivo yet, but at $120 I think I’ll pick one up :D
When you set it up for the live coverage, would you set it to record by time or by show? In other words, will it keep recording if the coverage goes over time if it’s set up to record the show?
Also, how many hours do you get out of a 40 hour unit at the best quality setting?

Set it for longer than the scheduled programming, esp. in the mountain stages, as they will inevitably run over and you'll miss the good part...so, if you can I would set it by time. If it's only recording by show it'll stop when the show was scheduled to be over. You can also just record the re-air of the live coverage, which they'll probably have started further in so that the end fits into the scheduled time. At least that's how it worked last year.
I imagine you get 40 hours with the 40 hour unit. I get 60 with my 60 hour unit...
I TIVO the Live coverage and have it record an additional 30 minutes. For the Giro, there was only one stage where I would have missed the end (luckily I was still home so I extended the recording by another half hour).
The easiest way is for your friend to set up a Season Pass where it only records new episodes only and set up the recording options to record an additional 30 minutes. I'll tivo the pre race show but it probably only has about 5-10 min of interesting info.
At best quality, you probably get 20 hours on a 40 hour tivo but YMMV. I use the medium setting.
