I have recently cleaned off my rim. I took off the freewheel with a special freewheel removing tool. When I put this freewheel back on my rim ( With plenty of lubricant ) It started making a cracking noise. This has happened to me before and the noise cleared up about 2 days after it starts. Well it has been 5 days and the cracking noise still hasnt gone away. If anyone could tell me what I need to do it would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like too much contamination. If it really gets to you get a new one. They are not that much.

Hi,
Yes I agree with Hunter. I happened to me after cleaning the bike too with a regina free wheel. Here is what I do now. Open the freewheel (for some brand you have
to remove cogs too) clean all the surfaces (if there is corosion it is dead) wipe all the surfaces whith a cloth with just a little hub grease on it. Just a drop of tick oil on the "jingler" then grease lightly the ball races stick the balls on the grease on one side reassemble the two parts of the freewheel, put the ball on the grease on the other side
screw the the "cone" and your are done. Then no more oil or solvent on the freewheel !
With this I'm able to commute all winter long on roads full of sodium with no problems.
Hope it helps.
Philippe.

This frewheel is quite old. How much would I be looking at if I wanted to replace it with a new one?
