Hey y'all. I'm looking at a Mojave 4.0 on craigslist that has been cheaply made into a single speed, eg. the derailleurs have been removed and the chain shortened to fit with a chain tensioner. I haven't seen any bikes with disc brakes this cheap and it seems it might be good for Colorado winters (upgrading from NC winters, which might actually be wetter...) I know you folks don't usually like this kind of thread, but I'm not very familiar with mountain bike parts and thought some input from here might be helpful. My instinct is that it's a good deal if it fits me.

Any thoughts?

"I single speeded this bike after giving the shifters to a friend. It's very sturdy and simple to maintain, you could have a lot of fun with it as a dirt jumper or it could make an unstoppable commuter.

It's the stock 4.0 (from 2006 I think) except for the following;

-Sun Rims Rhynolite front wheel (laced w/ DT Swiss spokes)
-Specialized Resolution tires
-WTB seat
-Nashber SS kit w/ chain tensioner
-Wippermann SS chain

Stock components include:

-Tektro mechanical disc brakes
-SR suntour XC fork

Price is OBO, I'll give you the front derailluer free in case you want to make a geared bike again."

For $140. Hell Yes! If you have not bought it buy now, I would be really surprised if it is still for sale.

1) it appears to actually be the 4.5
http://bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?ItemID=10978&Type=bike
MSRP $330

2) posting the CL ad here could be a quick way for someone else in the area to go snap up your awesome find- ;)

3) What kind of riding are you planning on doing? Commuting, MTBing? If if its just to kick around on you probably don't need disc's anyway... Unfortunately I don't have more to offer than that, as I'm new to the whole MTB scene too. Happy riding!

Haha. "Hell yes" was the answer I was half hoping for. I'm seeing the guy tomorrow morning, hopefully he didn't sell it at 9pm tonight. I think I was the first emailing party.

I'm mostly going to be commuting on it and using it as a winter bike. Nothing I have has particularly good clearance. My '71 Schwinn Super Sport could probably fit 700x40 tires, but a bit wider might be better for snow...

If the bike is in good as shape as the pic shows, that is a steal. If it was me, I would just give him or her a buck 40 and run, but look it over first to make sure. And take the front Derailleur also if you can.
