As part of my Tour de 620+ miles of NYC bike paths, I rode the bike/walking trail in LaTourette Park today. About a week before, I walked it with a friend, who lives nearby.
I was puzzled over the placement of a light gravel over the hard path. If I were able to get my Huffy over 5 mph, I think cornering some of the turns or attempting to brake (assuming the brakes worked) could cause a skid. I wondered if the placement of the gravel was a subtle attempt to prevent cyclists from speeding through the path.
I clocked the entire path at about 2.5 miles in each direction. There were some hilly spots, but nothing too horrible. A major section of the path runs alongside the golf course, something the golfers aren't too happy about. Some walkers with little children have encroached on the green, causing the golfers some concern.
There aren't a lot of people using the trail at this point, which gives some solo walkers some concern.
Environmentalists were unhappy with how construction of the trail has endangered some plant life in the park.
One end of the trail is at Richmond Ave & Forest Hill Road by the Costco. I took the opportunity to buy a 120 roll pack of Charmin Ultra. Although it made the return trip a little difficult, at least I have my toilet paper needs covered for the next week.
