my son managed to do what no one else has managed to do - he killed my subaru! (actually, it was the deer's fault!)
with only 336,000+ miles on it, the front end of my 2000 Outback is so caved in, it is not worth fixing... so it is listed on Craig's List for parts (central wv) - there's a Yakima roof rack with a regular MTB set up & a lefty set up, too.

So is your freezer at least full of deer meat?

My son did his share of damage...starting at two!
While in a carseat, he pulled and pulled on the armrest every time he was in the car until it ripped off the door.
A few years back in a rush to get out the door, the boys were taking their sweet time arguing over who got shotgun, etc and I realized that I'd left my cell on the table. I didn't even think to set the parking brake ran the 30' to the house, ran back outside and in that timespan:
-They'd bounced around in the truck so much it started rolling backwards.
-My son threw open the passenger door, jumped out and tried to stop it rolling with his body....rather than reaching over and pulling the brake.
-The passenger door caught the power pole and bent forward, no longer able to close.
-My formerly undinged and pristine truck now required a bungee cord to keep the door closed.
Had he just sat there, nothing would've happened. The truck would've missed the pole and the driveway is flat.

If it has one of the rubber accordion shift boots (and it's in good shape) I'm interested in it.

At least he was luckier than the girl who was driving this thing...

bummer, he and you would be better served if the deer was struck. My wife had a similar experience, Swerved, just caught the rear of the deer (no damage), yet crazed a utility pole, flattening the right front fender almost to the door.
Agent said if the damage was result of hit with the deer, it was under comprehensive, but because she served and caught the pole, it was under my collision, so deductible was applied.

A guy I met had his p71 stolen. The police ended up chasing the guy who stole it. The conclusion of the chase was when the thief crashed the P71 at 130 miles per hour. It had minor front end damage which he easily repaired. :D

Is no one else reeling at the thought of how many miles this vehicle has on it?
Maybe it's just me being crazy, but I only put 1500 - 2000 miles/year on my Jeep. I've already estimated that my tires are more likely to dry-rot from age than have the tread wear down before the 75k rated miles are reached.

It's a Subaru, Clifton. That's the point of this story. They are hella hard to kill.

Wow, about 37K/year. Yeah, that's a lot of miles. My truck is 3 years older with 150K on it, about 12.8K/year.
Most people who live in places like central WV put a lot of miles on their vehicles. When you have to drive 17 miles each way to get groceries or 32 miles each way to work it adds up quickly. I had to part with my 1988 s10 with almost 200,000 miles to get a truck with a cab big enough for car seats otherwise it would have 300,000 by now.

Trans Am: 14 years old with 36k miles. Don't even get me started on the Mercedes.....

I know. They're amazingly reliable vehicles. But Wordbiker got what I'm in awe of:

I can't imagine driving that much. Even back in Ohio, before my divorce, when I was stuck driving the ex around and had two jobs to drive to I wasn't even within 10K of that.
At my current rate, 37K miles will take me almost 19 years to rack up.

That's why 15K miles/year is the AVERAGE. Some people drive 37K a year, some 1.5K a year. I drive about... 15K per year. Hey, someone's gotta be the average. :)

I've owned my YJ since 99....bought it with 49k, put 20k on it the first year and it now has 73k....my SSR's are 9 years of age and need replaced.

That sucks man! I had a 95 Legacy and loved it. Gave it to a friend after she hit 200k. She's all rusted out but still running strong. Man, I miss working on that car...it was a dream to work on.

I would imagine mileage could be much lower when split between a half dozen or more vehicles.
My truck is my only vehicle, and I live in the sticks. I still don't get 37K/year.

I drive all over WV as a student financial aid consultant, so I average between 3,000 and 4,000 miles a month - never mind that that car must have been to over 150 MTB races during its life. My new car (a 2008 Honda Fit that I bought with 8900 miles on it on March 23rd) already has over 20,000 miles on it!
My son was fine - it was a slo-mo accident on a dirt road, so he hit the pole going about 20 mph... NOW he knows that he should have just hit the damn deer!!! THAT would have probably only cost me a plastic grill - maybe a windshield at most!!
