Bicyclist killed on Churchill Road
By KELLYN BROWN, Chronicle Staff Writer
CHURCHILL -- A 52-year-old bicyclist was killed Thursday morning when she was run over by a tractor-trailer making a wide turn into a Churchill Road ranch driveway.
Lynne Droge of Manhattan was southbound on her bicycle when she was hit by a northbound dairy truck. The Gallatin County coroner's office confirmed she died at the scene from blunt force trauma.
"It appears the bicyclist fell over and was run over by the truck," Amsterdam Fire Chief Dave Hoekema said. "The truck was northbound and had to swing into the southbound lane to make the turn."
Aside from that, Hoekema had few details about the nature of the accident, which took place just north of mile marker 10 on the winding two-lane road.
The Montana Highway Patrol is in charge of the crash investigation and interviewed the Darigold Farms driver Thursday, who was the only witness to the fatality.
The woman -- who was riding her 10-speed bicycle on a stretch of road sprinkled with dairy farms on both sides -- was killed at about 9:45 a.m.
The truck was pulling two Darigold trailers.
Once on the scene, Amsterdam firefighters and Highway Patrol troopers closed the road in both directions.
The closure hardly backed up traffic on the road and the few onlookers on the scene were outnumbered by officers and medical personnel.
Droge's body was just a few feet from the back tires of the tractor-trailer. A tarp was set up to block the view as she was loaded into the back of a Gallatin County coroner's van.
This is the seventh traffic fatality in this county in 2004. At this time last year there had been eight traffic deaths.
