I purchased a Cannondale CAAD 5 R700 about 5 years ago. It’s a beautiful bike and I love the way it rides.
My right brake shifter froze recently. I submerged it in WD-40 with no luck. There were no options to expose the inner workings, so I threw it away. I’m now on a quest to find a replacement .
The entire drive train is Shimano 105, a 9 speed triple. My brake shifters are Shimano 5500 STI. These brake shifters appear every so often on e-bay, but not frequently enough for my taste. A LBS suggested upgrading the brake shifters to the Shimano R600 if no 5500 become available any time soon.
Is this good information? Can I replace the brake shifters as they suggested without replacing any drive train components? Sadly, upgrading the entire drive train at this point in my life is not an option. I’m looking to replace only the brake shifters.
Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Have you looked on eBay for a replacement? Poke around online bike-shops for them as well.

Good luck!
