Sorry, watching L.A. Ink and my mind is wondering in this thread. The girls on that show are so freaking hot!

Anyway, some of you may not know this but I have been building up some material and plan on doing some stand up comedy sometime in the fall at a local amateur club in Pittsburgh. It's definitely something that I've wanted to do for some time now and I'm hoping to eventually make it my cash cow eventually...just want to pay the bills. I don't care if I have to scrimp and save just to eat Ramon noodles. It's either that or go to law school and become a blood sucking lawyer. Either choice would work out for me. However, I would prefer to make people laugh.

With that said, Bill Hicks is my favorite comedian. He left us way too early folks. Every time I pop in a DVD or CD of his I forget the pain and stress I'm going through. He was truly gifted folks and I suggest you YouTube some of his acts after reading this post.

So, who is your favorite comedian?

It's been rumored that Denis stole some of Hick's work. However, I like alot of his work other than the smoking gig (said stolen work).

I don't have a favorite, but I get a lot of replay out of these sets:

Mitch Hedberg - Comedy Central
Eddie Murphy - Delirious
Chris Rock - Bigger and Blacker

If Yucko the Clown has a career, surely you can make some headway. :D

Carlin was great.

I don't find Dane Cook funny at all. He is my daughter's comedy hero.

That's a Generation Gap right there.

Oh well.

Dead-Rodney Dangerfield

I really miss that show Tough Crowd that used to come on before The Daily Show because they always had some of the best stand-up comedians working at the time, with a little Carrot Top thrown in there every now and then.

I like Gallagher's comedy until he starts with the props.

His observational humor gets me laughing.

I liked George Carlin when he wasn't going for shock points with profanity... Again, his observational bits were the best.

I guess I like comedians that look at society and deconstruct some aspect humorously. That is what I am calling observational. Personal stories can be funny, but putting it in a broader picture helps me to see humor around me even after the act.

Dane Cook chews.

My friends think he's funny.

When I'm at one of their places watching cable television and he comes on, I'm almost obligated to laugh at the stupid **** that comes out of his mouth to prevent my friends' feelings from getting hurt when I have to explain why I'm not laughing and why he sucks so much ass.

My favorite is whomever can make me laugh. There are some so-called comedic geniuses that do nothing for me. I might be a dumb Okie, but I find the British whit appealing. The wife can't get enough of 'Are You Being Served?' on PBS and I'm seriously craving some olde 'Fawlty Towers'. Don't know if John Cleese ever did stand-up, but he sure has amazing comedic timing.

Since you have some insight here, are there any good modern comedians?

I think we can all go through George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, etc., etc., and pick a few ones we like from some period in history, but it seems like the only widely publicized modern comedian is Dane Cook, who is just horrible. I honestly just don't get it...at all.

In Houston, Madigan or Fat Boy, or Lewis Black or whoever get interviewed once in a while and are funny for a bit, but nothing that makes me think 90 minutes of it would be a good idea.

So, who is good TODAY?

I grew up with an East Indian Family... was nearly adopted.

His commentary is hilarious because it is so very true.

Brent Butt (creator of Corner Gas) is also hilarious... especially when you also come from a rural background.

Eddie Izzard has been mentioned, so I'll add Dylan Moran. Can't give a YouTube link since I can't get to YouTube, but do a search for "Monster". His TV show, Black Books, is also one of my favourite comedy series ever.

My take on this thread at 2AM: Comedy has changed....though perhaps just in a pendulum swing. I spent most of this evening checking out the stylings of comedians suggested by younger men than myself, and all I can take away from it is unfortunately not a lot of belly laughs. Perhaps it's my age and being out of touch with current sentiments, but I see a throwback to comedy as a serious approach to social commentary.

Demetri Martin is certainly a brilliant and well-spoken young man. His perceptions concise and biting, his wit revealing many shared sentiments about the state of our planet. I got many smiles, very few belly laughs, but above all respect for him saying what he feels.

With apologies to couch, I watched Bill Hicks' material with less enthusiasm. I had always seen comedians like Lenny Bruce (thanks to Tom for the mention) as relevant, but not whom one would look to for escapist silly chuckles. It's obvious to me that much like PK Dick used Sci Fi as a mere vehicle, or as the Gulliver's Travels author Jonathan Swift parodied the political culture of his time, comics like these are definitely pushing an agenda or the boundaries of what is acceptable in "polite" society behind a thin veil of entertainment and allegory. I'm not saying I didn't listen, just that I might not agree with the political message being promoted. I did listen.

To wrap up, I'd like to mention one of the purest comedians I can think of, one that surpassed all barriers and one that promotes the healing in each laugh that we see we are all alike, despite all artificial boundaries we may impose between ourselves, someone that I would have a hard time believing hadn't given each and every one of us a chuckle, a smile, or an outright belly laugh at one point or another....and perhaps into the future: Bill Cosby.
