Much as I like the idea of a 13-foot-wide bike lane, I don't think the bottom option is feasible. The minute you declare an area off limits to cars, the pedestrians will fill it up.

interesting idea... not matter what they do, whenever something goes wrong, it's the cyclist's fault....
ie. the cyclist got on front of the golf ball...
