I'd be curious to hear what gear you typically ride in on flat ground and no wind (and your typical speed).

at the beginning of a 200k? run to the grocery store? end of a 400k? middle of the night on a fleche?
what does this matter?

and by gear - do you mean gear inches, gain ratios, or how many clicks up or down on the rear, and big or little ring in the front?

and wouldn't you want to know what we weigh, what we are carrying around on the bike (or body), and how much our bike weighs? what tires we are running? shorts and t-shirt, full aero kit? tt bars, drops, or sitting up straight and looking around? dirt or pavement? traffic or country road or bike path?

sigh.

2:1 gearing all the time. Average speed around 13, somewhat variable.

Oh gear, hmmmm . . . I usually stay in my 44 (sometimes in my 50) and somewhere in between 14-17 in the back (I've got a 12-21 so my gearing is really close). This will all change when I get my new Cranks next week though.

Average 18-22 mph, and I can do it for about 60-70 miles, after that I'm happy with anything over 15 mph

100 miles flat, alone in a 39/13 combo, 17.2 average. Hard to say with no wind cause one usually encounters some kind of wind somewhere along the way.

40 miles, done 19 average pushing at a good effort.

10 miles, averaged 22.6 at best riding my butt off!:D

I weigh 230 and don't draft cause most riders are too small to get a good draft anyway!:p

I'll average 19 mph on my 35 to 55 mile long fitness rides. I use a 1 X 10 speed with a 44t chainring and a 12-27 rear cassette. I'm using 44X15, 44X16 and 44X17 for 90% of my riding. My cadence is in the 85 to 105 range.

I live n Chicago and ride solo most of the time.

Gear chart using MPH @ 90 RPM

For 700 X 28 / 28-622 tire with 175 mm cranks

With 10-speed 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-24-27 Cassette

44t Chainring
cog MPH at 90 rpm cadence
12 26.3

13 24.3

14 22.5

15 21.0

16 19.7

17 18.5

19 16.6

21 15.0

24 13.1

27 11.7

I'll tell you if the Seattle Randos ever find a flat road.

Flat, no wind (like THAT ever happens), I run a 53/19 on my 26" drive wheel recumbent. Cruising speed 20mph, give or take a couple. FYI, that comes out to 90-110 rpm.

42 X 14 or 15, depending on how tired I am. So say, 19.5-22.
