ah, so.
I am trying to determine who's putting the hustle on who here, in a case of a somewhat mysterious Peugeot for sale. I will wind up going out to check it out, but I am trying to do my homework first.
This is how it has been described to me:
"crankset is marked Peugeot-shiftlevers are suntour....weinnman type 500 brakes...maillard hubs and rims....quick release wheels...itailian seat....i`d say model is PX10....mid 1980`s bike....12 speed roadbike....rumor is they don`t make these in France anymore -not even in china...look at ebay under completed items....px10 peugeot....my price is 1/3 that price.....and no shipping....anyways,its alot better deal than a ford explorer-LOL....have nice day...gimme a call if you`d like to check it out .....i have several hours into detailing this bike- it looks sharp-paint is in great condition"

He wants 90 bucks. Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated. My personal opinion is the guy has cruised ebay, found that PX10 get good prices, and is selling this one accordingly. Sorry for the lack of picture.
Thanks all

Identifications of PX's at best need independent verification. Between here and ebay, I see far, far too many just plain wrong identifications of PXs. No wonder; they're Peugeot's best model, and major races were won on them; Eddy Merckx even rode one early in his career.

The bike is of the right vintage so I'd turn it over and see if the serial number is still there. These were on a piece of paper by then, I think; the second line should contain the model number (eg PXN10E). Info on reading these is here, along with some info on the various PX models:

http://www.classicrendezvous.com/France/Peugeot/PX10_history.htm

Look for tubing stickers. A PX should be Reynolds full 531 with a few rare exceptions (Columbus SLX or Vitus 979 for a very select few bikes, read the above history.). Run away if the tubing sticker says "HLE" (Haute Limit Elastique, or something like that) or Carbolite 103-- the more common, low end tubing. Not a bad bike, but not 90$, either (15$ is about right). There are some models (the PK and the PR) which have only the three main tubes Reynolds 531. Speaking from personal experience, these less valued bikes are still worth the $$$ the seller is asking. Great rides, and the other two people I know who have them agree.

A real PX sells generally for a bit more on ebay; the late ones bring about 175-225$, depending on the week and mood of the bidders, phase of the moon, whatever.

If it says Peugeot on the crankset its not PX-10. Definitley early '80's. $90 bucks?? NO!! maybe $50.

Sounds like a basic UO-10 Carbolite 103 frame to me. I had one briefly and felt that it had a leaden ride quality. The nonstandard seat post diameter and Swiss bottom bracket threads make replacement or upgrade parts difficult to find. Hold out for a REAL PX-10, or at least a PR-10/PKN-10.

thanks alot for the votes of caution. Not only was the frame Carbolite, it look like it had been submitted to a careful and thorough beating with a garden shovel. It feels good to have walked away.

"If it says Peugeot on the crankset its not PX-10."

Some of the late seventies Peugeots came with stronglight cranks badged Peugeot, including various P models. I've a 1979 PFN10E that came stock with them, as well as a 1979 PKN10E with similar cranks (but far nicer, with drilled chainrings). I'm not positive, but I would not be surprised if the PX's from the same year came with similar cranks. All three are listed as stock with stronglight cranks.

Later Peugeot badged cranks were Japanese made, although I confess I'm unsure exactly who made them, and could not tell you what bikes they were on.

"Not only was the frame Carbolite, it look like it had been submitted to a careful and thorough beating with a garden shovel. "

It's likely the seller simply trolled ebay and found which Peugeots were worth the most money, and decided by some obscure logic (possibly connected with greed) that his bike was indeed a PX10. Either that, or someone else told him. From your description, my estimate of 15$ was just a touch high. Sorry.

John E is right about the ride quality of the UO10, I have one and use it as a workhorse bike-- it hauls my trailer. It's good for that, and I like it, but I could part with it if need be. The PKs, PRs, PXs, and even the PF all have a very nice ride.

These were the type of cycle that French made for dumb Americans back in the 1970's. This bike is worth nothing.

Gee and I thought the whole French attitude was a misconception...

And I thought Americans were ignorant. I'm still waiting for proof otherwise.

You know, we are all here because we love riding, talking about and working on bikes... there is no need for your hateful attitude. By calling all Americans ignorant, you are the only one coming off as being ignorant. Blanket statements like that earn you no credibility or respect.

Obviously didn't work.

with the exception of Cycles Singer and Mavic there are no currently manufactured French
bikes or components worth owning.

Non, tu es une ******bag.
