Great Lakes - Superweek: The official thread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Sorry to take over the other thread, but I'm not sure anyone was expecting it to be 9 pages long. If that happens again for superweek (which is an extra week long), we're looking at a thread that is at least 22-25 pages. I can't keep up with that.
So, here is the new superweek thread. Post your schedules, then chat about the series.
Here is my schedule:

I'm only gonna do a few races in Superweek. I was completely useless about 6 days in to ToAD (or I was useless every day, depends who you ask) so I figure doing less races will be easier on me. So...
Lake Front RR 7/16
Whitnall Park Crit 7/21
Lake Front Long RR 7/22
Kenosha Folks & Spokes 7/24
Humboldt Park 7/25
Whitefish Bay 7/26

It's going to suck either way.
I'd say go through. At least you'll get to stare at the Sears Tower and chicago skyline as you're sitting in traffic.
Report in when you get a chance! I'm guessing that you and chicagobikeracing.com will have the best coverage on this deal. Again.

I say go around. IIRC I advised that as well last year and you tried it. What do you remember about how that went? Running and gunnning is still better than sitting and swearing IMHO.....
....but it IS going to suck to be you... ;)

Made it!
They just closed the course off. Riders arriving although I did see Andy Crater already parked with lawn chairs out. Am only 3 blocks from S/F, , just off the Metra tracks and as far as I can tell, this is a legal spot. This is like a differenct country I tell 'ya!

Fast race, HUGE crowd, some very frustrating things going on though:
Cannot hear announcer 50 meters past the line.
People walking in front of photographers AND standing in front of awards with puny video cam? on stage? I'll show those pix later. Gotta run.

Heh heh! I'll have more in a bit, going thru some pix and uploading right now.
Got lucky with the traffic, the bad stuff was always going the other way. Made 101 miles in 2 hours coming back (there is no speed limit on those express lanes .... right? )
Boy ... after a long, hard shoot, I can't think of anything better than a frozen diner and some Sunny D. Mmmm mmmm .... DE-LISH! :(

Rant: Okay, I'm used to fighting for a shot of the final sprint. I'll set up with 10 laps to go, find the sweet spot only to loose it on the final lap leaving me leaning over the barriers, leg wrapped around a telephone pole so I don't fall onto the ground. I'm used to the official parking right in my line, blocking the view JUST as the riders round the final turn. I'll throw rocks at him, whatever. I'm used to that.
BUT:
http://www.peloton-pix.com/photos/587681579_6Hvwy-L.jpg
What's this clown's problem??? Standing right on stage, sticking his toy video recorder in the faces of the riders during the podium ceremony? NOT PROFESSIONAL. NOT ACCEPTABLE and I made a jab at him on my page.
Other problems - we couldn't hear the announcers a mere 50 meters past the finish line. There were no speakers pointing that way, and when the band started up in the park across the street - FORGET ABOUT IT. "What? Was that the bell? Is this the last lap? Got me, I can't hear a thing!" Very surprising considering that it's 10 Speed Drive, the same outfit that did the announcing at ToAD. No problems then.
Lastly, the race only started 20 minutes late, yup, it's Superweek!

LOL....... ahhh the reasons why the ToAD is going to kick Superweeks but in the next few years. People will be saying Superwhat?

Pre-rode the Elgin circuit again today. If you're looking to shoot somewhere other than S/F area the most distinctive feature on the course will be the tree-lined climb away from the Fox River on Trout Valley road... At the north end of the course.
It looks like the entire circuit will be closed to cars so you'll either have to drive up there OR bring a bike (the Fox River Trail) will take you through trout valley park which is right across from the hard-right leading to the climb.
For anyone interested I have the course map up at mapmyride.com. Put Elgin for search location and "superweek" for key word.
See you all out there.

Prime.
John Wilke
07-11-09, 03:11 PM
Yeah, I believe that was a $200 prime. Guess he had to earn that one. :p
7 riders escaped in the 3's today, gained a lap. Pretty much all ChiTown folks. XXX get's the victory. Prob. 30 or 35 finishers.
There's about the same number of riders in the Pro 1/2/3 (if you wanna ride, go ahead) race right now. No one of big interest. One IS Corp, , two from Taiwan, two from Jamaica, and a team from ? that look just like the Spider Monkey kit. No Kenda at all, dunno where they are.
Boy, this is kind of a low rent area, eh? In all of 5,000 square miles of Chicago ... why did they pick here? :( If Ricter is like this are on Monday, then I'm gonna skip it. Not worth the drive.
Yeah, will try to get to Elgin early and scope out the point to point drive situation. Those are really tough courses to shoot.
Okay, Women are picking up the pace, guess I could shoot a few.

That's 3 to 4 hours of heavy driving a day - uh - pass. I don't mind burning a day hanging out at the races, but the commute is a killer. I've had my fill for a while.
Oh, are you supposed to stop for those tolls? I got confused. :P

The races end at 9pm ... not noon. :D
Good luck - get a Prime!
Elgin update:
1. I owe superweek an apology. Thing here today are incredibly well organized, the course is great (hard) and very well marshalled/marked. I'd highly suggest it for anybody potentially interested if they run here next year.
2. Not withstanding the above, the last 3 turns are tight, dirty, slow, and tore up. Fairly bad wreck to end the 4/5's. One broken collarbone, several people on the deck, and a pair of carbon rims wrecked like I've never seen.
3. I still suck at anything with a hill. Dropped on the last lap. Last one to get dropped and finished 27 of 75 (61 finishers).
John Wilke

I'd say that's a pretty good sized field.

I'd say that's a pretty good sized field.
Yeah, I remember last year in the 4/5's there were a few races where if you finished you were in the money! Aside from a call I got at 9 this morning from a friend who was supposed to officiate, and then told by the Garrisons that they "had their own officials" and that he should leave, everything has been positive. I think ToAD scared them into running a tighter ship.
John Wilke
07-12-09, 02:38 PM
As far as officiating, they have one on a motorcycle following every race and he is Big Brother. I was listening to 'race radio' and they reported a guy who gave a hand up (one) to one of the South African riders. He and the rider was 'warned'. You see, the local riders know where to get their hand ups - it ain't in front of an official and it ain't your normal cycling bottle. That's all I'm saying on that one.
Did the Blue Island crit on Sat,this was my second time racing. It was a 4/5 field and I came in mid pack 23 out of 43 riders.I felt good during the race, towards the end the pace slowed then kicked back up again.I was in a good spot for the sprint, but as I came out of the last turn a rider in front of me went down and there went the pack.If at first you don't succeed......I think it was about half way thru the race coming out of turn two and I here yelling behind me and somebody going down, not a nice sound.
