The fixed cup holds the chainguard in place. Since the fixed cup is recessed, I cannot get my Park bottom bracket remover to work. Is there something like a 3-prong freewheel socket for this type of job? If there is, where do I buy one? I don't want to bend the BB wrench if I don't have to.

Have you considered the 'big bolt' (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tooltips/bbcups.html)method? If the cup is hardened or not completely stuck in place you should be able to get it out this way without leaving a mark.

You see those a lot on 1950s and 1960s Italian bicycles. I haven't seen the tool myself. Have you tried Sheldon's bottom bracket fixed cup remover? http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tooltips/bbcups.html

I had this exact problem with a much less beautiful bike.

I wish I had known about Sheldon Brown's method before I used a hammer and screwdriver.

The funny part is that there MUST have been some kind of tool back in the day for this type of chain guard. Very weird.

I have broken two bolts trying to remove some very stubborn fixed cups until I got this.....

Can you slide the wrench through the slot on the bottom where the chain goes? You wouldn't have much motion but maybe enough to get it loosened.

Using the Sheldon Brown method with one 3-foot cheater pipe and one busted socket extender and I claim: Victory!!! :thumb: I'd say there is a better than average chance it is the first time that fixed cup has been removed in 70 years.

I got my friend in Belgium to hook me up with it. I took a bike to the LBS he works at one day and saw how simple it was using that very tool to remove the fixed cup, so I asked if I could some how buy one. The next time I went to the bike shop i received that tool (without handles) as a gift. Pretty cool!! I got the handles welded here in MD, though they didn't do a "clean" job IMO.
