Southern California - Does road racing in SoCal really end in August???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

OK --- so it looks like I'll be in SoCal (The OC, specifically) through the end of September for work. And, due to time and budget constraints, I won't be traveling back home on some weekends. So I took a look at the racing schedule for SCNCA (SCNCA Race Schedule (http://www.scnca.com/2009calendar.asp)) and it appears that, starting in September, there's only an occasional poopy time trial left for the rest of '09 --- no crits or road races.

No post August crits or road races in SoCal. :( Really? Really?? This seems odd to me.

Even your brethren in NoCal have post August races scheduled (NCNCA Race Schedule (http://ncnca.org/road/)).

I know that there are rides like Rose Bowl and Montrose that are basically races, but it seems odd that sanctioned road racing in SoCal seems to end in August.

Most people are racing every weekend starting at the beginning of February (or end of January) around here and a lot of people have their first peak at the end of March or beginning of April. Most people are burned out by the beginning-middle of August. In NorCal the meat of the season doesn't start until until a month or so later, thus the season goes longer. Hell, a lot people start base at the end of September.

Damn, I wish Colorado (home) was like that -- then I wouldn't have to worry about base so much over the colder months (I'm a fair weather cyclist... I know, HTFU). Cross season here starts in September as a result of our road season starting way too early (as witnessed by about half of our races in February, March and even April being canceled), so I was hoping that road racing in SoCal wouldn't wind down until into the Fall.

Hhmmm, perhaps a road trip to NoCal in September will be in order.

Sheesh, I'll be back in the gym 3x /week working on leg presses and such by mid August. But then I gotta start getting ready for El Tour de Tucson in November... kinda throws a wrinkle in the typical SoCal training cycle.

There are a few good races in August. After August it's pretty much done...

NorCal September Cal Cup races are worth the road trip. San Ardo, the University RR, and Patterson are all solid events w competitive fields. I'm sure you have already but the place to go is...
