Classic & Vintage - Odd sized Campy crank bolt.

I was working on a mid 1980s Pinarello with a Campy Super Record groupset and the Campy engraved crank bolt is 14.5 mm. I have never seen anything other than 14 mm and I was wondering if anyone remembers this setup. Also, where in blazes do I find a wrench?

Are you sure it's not a 15?

I checked it with a micrometer. Also, a 15 mm socket is too big.

Time to try substituting a non-metric size socket. I bet a 9/16 or 19/32 socket will get the job done. Best of luck.

Unfortunately, all my 32 sockets are too thick to fit, even if they happen to be the right size. The LBS doesn't remember back that far so I guess I will let it go.

Take the frame to your friendly hardware store and see if you can find a socket which fits. My guess is for $3-6 you will find a socket that fits. ACE brand sockets are thin enough to fit in my Campy cranks.

Campy used a 15mm. The Japanese used 14mm, French used 16 or 17mm. A 9/16 wrench is almost a perfect substitute for a 14mm wrench. I went out to buy one of those wrenches park used to sell with 14/15/17, and found out that nobody sells those wrenches around here, if they exist at all. You need a thinwall 15. I don't know if Sears will still honor their lifetime guarantee when you break one of their sockets after you grind it down; they used to back when they were still run by people that knew what a good marketing ploy that was.

Thanks guys. The size of the bolt is about .35mm smaller than the usual 15mm bolt heads I have measured, but I will look for a thin 15mm socket. Glad they went to 14mm finally.

I just solved the same problem (15mm crank bolt of an 70's Ofmega, Campagnolo clone) with a Craftsman 15mm 3/8 socket bought for $3.90 at Sears. The socket is 21.5mm in diameter that fit perfectly into the 21.8mm opening.

I saw that in the 1986 catalog and assumed it was the right fit, but I was not about to throw $40 on an assumption if it turned out that it was not for the exact bolt I had. I'll go with the thin wall route.
