This has probably been addressed in the past, but when is the proper time to shift for English 3-speeds with a S-A hub? Do you shift while pedaling or not pedaling? It doesn't seem to matter to me?

Coasting or not pedaling works great, back pedaling works good> You Can pedal "easy" and shift but could cause wear to clutch and pinions. Tim

An epicyclic hub transmission should be shifted while coasting. Equivalently, it may be shifted while backpedaling, with the bike either moving or stationary. If you are underway, you may keep pedaling very lightly while shifting, but you should avoid putting any load on the pedals while changing gears. We used to goof around with preprogrammed upshifting -- while applying torque in low gear, move the lever up to second. The transmission will not shift until you ease up on the pedals a bit.
