Hi there, My name is Paul and I live in Brooklyn, NY. I usually ride for exercise, and I'm contemplating participating is some of the 5 Boro Bike Club's rides later this summer. I actually commuted to work in Manhattan yesterday, about 20 miles each way. There are a number of bike paths and streets marked with bike lanes on the way to my office, so it was less scary than you might think. I also plan to ride, for exercise, from my house to Central Park, about 45 miles or so round trip. I am definitely not of the bike messenger ilk. I have a new (1 year old) Motobecane Mirage that I have been very happy with. I've had no problems with the bike until my ride home yesterday when I broke a spoke on my rear wheel. Is this common? I've been riding since i was a teen, (some 30 years ago), and I've never done that. I had a Raleigh bike as a teen and I still have a Miyata, that I purchased when I moved to NY 23 years ago. Glad to have found the forums, and look forward to popping on in the future.

If you didnt break the spoke on one of NYC monster potholes, you can just replace the spoke. Broken spokes on the non drive side of the rear wheel are usually due to insufficient tension. After you replace the spoke, take the wheel to a bike shop and ask them to check the tension on both the drive side and nondrive side. The drive side should be just over 100 kg. If it was due to a pothole you may need a new rim and 25 or 28 mm tires.

Thanks for the reply. It is on the drive side, It happened crossing the bike path on the Manhattan Bridge. I don't have a cassette removal tool, so I will probably bring it to my LBS later this week. I've been able to avoid the potholes. (so far)
