So I've asked around (on here I think) and it seems that there are lot of people with sub-40 minute PRs on Latigo (from PCH to the 2nd summit). My fastest time is 45mins. Yet, I haven't been passed ONCE on Latigo in the last several months and I typically will pass 3-5+ riders on my usual weekend climb. What is your PR on Latigo?

About 2 hours on a tandem. :D

What's the official starting and ending markers, anyway?

That's one climb I don't have recorded times. However, the last time I went up I did keep track, and the time was a little over an hour when starting at PCH and ending where Latigo meets Kanan Dume. That's 10 miles, if I'm not mistaken, and one mile of it is a descent.

Aye, anything under 45 is pretty snappy. Ovoleg did it with us once, and he was just under an hour. :p

Yeah, there's a summit about 3/4 of the way up the road, then a 1 mile descent before you continue climbing to the absolute top (and then a short descent to Kanan)

Yes. Here (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=34.087102,-118.80881&spn=0,359.997109&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=34.087016,-118.808786&panoid=z0xPCpQMAxsBqYEQa7Uf5g&cbp=12,5.63,,0,15.02) is second summit, you can even see the line. :)

Yeah, I've always thought of it as a 10 mile ride: ascend 7 miles to first summit, descend for one mile, ascend one mile to second summit, descend one mile to Kanan.

As for PR, well let's just say I'm a tortoise and not a hare.

45 mins is hauling up there. I am probably one of the guys you pass on the way up.
What kind of gear set up do you have on your bike and what is your average cadence when you are doing Latigo in 45 mins?

To the second summit line: 58 minutes today. Bla. At least I passed 3 people, so I had that going for me.

Actually, I had fun. A skinny guy in a blue kit and I started at the same time, but for some reason he pulled over within the first 300 feet, so I went up alone. Nearing the halfway point I spotted a pair up ahead, giving me the incentive to try and catch. Eventually I did, but then the blue kit rider passed me on a mellow section. With him in sight up ahead, I got my second wind, picked the pace back up and eventually caught him. As I was about to pass before the first summit, he again pulled over and stopped. At the line I stopped for a rest. Some 5 minutes later blue kit passed me as I was getting ready to resume riding. We ended up following the same route down to the coast via Kanan Dume and east along PCH, where we traded lead until I pulled into Malibu bluffs park.

I do double Latigos then Piuma, with the Latigos in 46-48min each when I'm working. Piuma I haven't timed, but it hurts me a more than the Latigos, mainly because of the accumulated distance at that point. I'll do a single Latigo all-out well under 45, and I have a hard time keeping up with Cat4s and low-end Cat3s. Then again, I'm a triguy...

I do recall going all-out and being passed buy someone who was hauling like I couldn't believe out there. Nearly 1/3rd faster than I was going, and not even near the top. Dang.

Since I read this thread in July I have been trying to get under 1 hour going from PCH to the 2d summit. After coming close a few times I finally did it on Saturday, 59:43. My next goal is to try to get under 55 minutes. However, I don't see sub 45 minutes in the future, that is hauling ---.

I went up it on Saturday. It took ...awhile. I first did the climb in 1988, I think.

It's Spanish for whip, or horsewhip. la-TEE-go. The letter I is always pronounced 'e' like in Pico. The emphasis is on the next to last syllable, unless there is an accent mark.

I've only done it once, last year on my cross bike. It was a fairly casual cruise and it took 54 minutes.

I read this post yesterday and decided to give this climb a try. I had never done it before. I did early this morning and it was dark for half of the ride, but it was fun. 45 minutes is a good time, I went pretty hard and did 45:30 to the top of the second summit but I think I could shed a couple of minutes if I remove the lights and bottles and put my race wheels on. Maybe next time.

45:30 is a good time. Since I made the original post, I've taken my PR down to 43 and change.

Also, per a guy at Helen's the record is 32 minutes by Taylor Hamilton when he was doping. The Helen's guy did it in 35 minutes.

More than shedding a pound of gear, just doing the climb frequently will help refine your plan of attack - when to hammer, for how long, and when to recover.

If 45 minutes or better is the mark that establishes one doesn't suck climbing Latigo, then as of today I'm 12 minutes away from not sucking. But I have reasons: air was bad, it was hot, front tire wasn't inflated to max psi, my brakes were rubbing...

+1. Sooooo hot today on Latigo... felt like 100 at the top.

I was heading up by 9am, so it wasn't quite as bad near the top (57 minutes later) as later in the day, but still quite warm. Then I headed down Rock Store and along Mulholland for awhile, which was roasty in spots. The stretch along Las Virgenes to the coast was really pleasant with the ocean breeze cooling things nicely.

What are the stats for this climb? Miles and elevation gained to second summit?

One other question, how does this compare to the first 8.5 miles on GMR? Easier, harder, the same?

DScott
11-05-09, 09:59 AM
Roughly 9 miles and 2200 ft. of climbing to second summit, average grade 5-6%. Sorry, I can't compare to GMR.

Hillbasher
11-05-09, 02:53 PM
That sounds pretty close to GMR ,except it only has a .25 mile downhill between the bottom gate and the top, and is 8.3 total miles or there about.

Ben FR

Latigo is very similar to GMR...Very.

Ouch! Did you approach it with a record time in mind? Or did it just turn out that way?

I went all out, trying to break my record.
